I'm having the same issue. It's Driving me insane. Stupid Telus
First off I'd like to stress that this topic is about the telus mobility version of the LG Chocolate or LG 8500 ( not to be confused with the LG VX8500 which is another phone )
The topics about the VX8500 are done to death but finding one for my phone is near impossible.
My question is simply how do i get past the lock that telus put on the phone that doesn't allow me to put my own files as ringtones?
Like I say, this question has been asked and answered many times for verizon's VX8500 ( simply use bitpim, which i would do, if it were compatible with this phone ) but i cannot for the life of me find information for the telus mobility version.
Any help would be greatly appreaciated.

soooo no one in the whole internet world knows how to get your own files as ring tones on this version of the chocolate?
First you have to get the USB Chocolate drivers that came MEK Music Essentials Kit. Humpa has them on his site. PM me and I'll give you the URL. This forum won't let me post an URL.
Install those. Then get the USB data cable for the LG 8500. Cost me 67 Canadian from telus after tax.
Then bitpim finds the phone on com4 as the VX8500
In the view menu you select "show filesystem" and then you can get to the BREW/16452/mds directory
You put your mp3 ringtones there. Then right-click any folder and reboot phone.
When the phone comes back alive you can then set your mp3 ringtone you just uploaded to the phone.
Under BREW/16452 there is a few directories. The ones I know are mds-mp3 ringtones mp-wallpapers (jpg/gif/png) and ms-midi ringtones The others, I can only guess at.
Hope this helps you.
Is the cable the same for the VX8500 and the Telus version 8500? I just got this cable from ebay, auction number 270091155077 for the VX8500. Before I read this thread. Heck, I bid on it before I even found this forum. This is my first cell phone. Just want to know if I wasted my money or not?
Here's a link to the cable http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=017&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&viewitem=&item=270091155077&rd=1,1
Hey Tomcat, Ive been trying to upload my phone info to bitpim but I keep getting "an unexpected exception has occured". Have you been able to crack your Telus 8500 or am I wasting my time. I do not have the MEK but do have the USB cable and the program recognizes my phone.
so u telling me this will work with my telus sorry newby i'm on phone with them and they say there is no way that they locked the phone LOL so i cant use "my kids voice as a ringtone"
did it work for u i ve same prob sorry newby i'm on phone with them and they say there is no way that they locked the phone LOL so i cant use "my kids voice as a ringtone"
I just got my cable, but tried to communicate with BITpim, but no lucj so far. Get some "tried to get 23 bits but got 25" error or something like that, can't remember exactly. This week I will get tome, hopefuly, to play. Been real buisy as of late
Tomcat's explanation worked just fine. Screw paying for ringtones, screw TELUS.
I should mention that I could not see the ringtones on the phone until I power cycled the phone.
Tomcat's post is only good for Ringones it will not work for alerts for appointments or text messages. I will post once I've figured it out.
Tomcat, can't pm you on this board, won't allow it. Can you email me drivers from the MEK kit, or the link to email@example.com
Thx very much, in advance. I have the cable, got it off Ebay, but still doesn't seem to work, not sure if they send me the right drivers or not
Hey guys. Im in need of ALOT of help. I did of what the walk through told me to do and it still wont show. I put my ringtone in the MDS file and I rebooted my phone. Then I looked in my phone for the ring tone, I first looked in the Sound Settings, then Ringtones, then My Music list. Its still not there. Il give some background information of the phone just incase it may help.
Canada, Telus, LG 8500, Bought April 2 2007
PLEASE HELP ME! Ive been trying to figure this out on my own for the past 24 hours or so and it has made me really frustrated/upset.
I am with Telus and HAD a razr. Stupid Future Shop guy said it played music. His english was crap though. Anyway long story short, I have had it for about 8 months, and yesterday my Van was broken into at the movie theatre and the phone is gone with some other stuff. and I have to buy another at full price. Looks like a lot of these phones have built in Mp3 players so if I have to pay $300 for a new razr, might as well get one that has an MP3.
BUT, I found out that this SPARK crap and Telus in general seems to be restricted. I had a data cable for the Razr but could upload nothing to it or download any pics I took, and if I took a pic and wanted to forward it to a buddy, have to use their BS web service at a price.
SO my question is, if I go with this LG 8500, can I upload Mp3's from my computer easily? Or has Telus got some jump through hoops garbage so I have to use there system and download, pay per song.?
Starting to think that I should just buy out the contract and just go back to Bell and re-activate my Blackberry.
You can upload songs easily to the sd memory card from your computer. And then play the mp3's from the memory card
Tomcat how did you buy the usb cable from telus? o.O
could u send me da url Tom cat url.i tink i alredy tried bitpim buh it doesnt let me play da songz on da phone:|
When i Connect my LG 8500(telus) phone to bitpim

is nothing there.srry newby.
Help is greatly appreciated!
i can confirm that tomcats explanation works perfectly!. i was even able to send it via bluetooth to my phone from my pc using bitpim. however i have a ton of games that i would like to put on my phone and havent figured out the game folder yet. has anyone? ringtones , wallpapers, midis and "my music" for the mp3 player all works flawlessly. thank you
i have followed tomcats step with the only exception i used bluetooth, i see the ringtone on thier but when i try to "set as" a little pop up comes up that says:
"NON-DRM protected media can not be used for ringtone"
need help ASAP! i used to have a telus razor and i used bitpim to upload music files but i had to delete some logs in the file system THAN reset the phone i do belibe the were 'mytone.bmp' and 'TONEs.bmp'. this allowed me use the songs i uploaded as ringtones. any help with the chocolate error?
Hey guys i read through this thread and my hopes are pretty high but i just bought an LG8600 on Telus and i am going to buy a usb cable, can anybody confirm that it should be the same on the 8600 as on the 8500.
I was comparing my phone with my sisters 8500 and it is essential the exact same OS so i am confindent that it will work.
I am really looking forward to never having to buy a ringtones anymore and be limited to telus's sh*tty selection of songs.
You can put custom ringtones on the phone.
first thing is first. You have to enable the filesystem in bitpim. Under "view" you can click on "filesystem" and that will put the filesystem option in the left column. This is using the MEK usb drivers and a cable.
You highlight filesystem and then click the little + by the folder in the right window pane. This will "retrieve data" from the phone. Then you can find the brew folder etc.
Telus won't help you bypass their stuff. They want to charge you to put stuff on your phone and they don't want custom stuff on the phone, only stuff they offer.
A LOT more info can be found at howard forums. It's all about cell phones. Including phones specifically from Telus and how to hack em, and customize them etc etc.
I always google my phones to find the most info I can.
Take care yall and good luck.
Sounds like yer using the 8600 (flip phone) not the 8500.
They found a way past the DRM issue on the flip phone. It's in the 8600 hacking thread at HoFo's.
It's the "phone modem kit" They say you can't use the cable to upload or mess with the phone but that's not true. Also I never used the CD that it came with for "using phone as a modem for PC/laptop"
So really I paid like 25 bucks for the cable and the rest was the software package.
Some telus outlets charge 75 for the modem kit.
