To the post about only needing to unlock a phone if you'r going overseas, that's false. Here's the scoop:
When you buy a phone from a retailer, you are typically paying a "subsidized" price. For example, Cingular may be offering a Samsung phone for free. Samsung didn't give the phone to Cingular out of the goodness of their hearts, so Cingular loses money on the sale of the device. The recoup the charge over the course of your contract. You can use other Cingular SIMs, but not others'.
There is actually a lawsuit going on about locking phones. The plantiffs basically say its illegal to lock the cell phone, because the (Early termination fees) or ETF would compensate the carrier for the subsidy. If you terminate and the device is locked you have no way to use another carrier's sim in the device.
But, there are ways around it. One - you can find services that will provide you the unlock codes (think of terms for google - not tough to find services). Nokia's are very easy - I bought a program from a guy on Ebay for $7 which will unlock many Nokia phones. For Motorola and other devices, you can seek out services that will charge you a fee to unlock the device - usually between $10 and $25.
Be warned, though. An earlier post mentioned using a 1900 only device in an area where Cingular has 850 service. Many areas (including Chicago) where Cingular owns 850 spectrum, they also have 1900 roaming agreements (in Chicago its with ATTWS, in Columbus I can select either ATTWS or T-Mobile). In other areas (Arkansas, New Orleans immediately come to mind) they do not have roaming agreements if your phone was purchased in a 850 market.
In other words, you could go to great lengths to unlock a 1900 mhz phone only to have it not be able to find a signal where you are b/c of lacking roaming agreements. ATTWS's 1900 spectrum is quite large, and I believe ATTWS and Cingular are implementing a global roaming agreement (all markets) in advance of the merger. That's only a rumour, so you may be in markets with no service.

the PUK code you get from your service provider (O2 in your case)... the PUK is a security protocol... just call them and tell them you see enter PUK on the screen...they will give you the PUK code... call from another phone... have you cel in hand
