does anyone know if its possible to create your own ringtones and then load them onto any of the verizon phones? is it possible to take an mp3 then chop it up and transform it into a format that can be used as a ringtone? how do you get it on the phone??

I'm looking to get a new phone as well (very frustrated w/ my moto v120e! Initially I wanted the LG VX6000 because of the attractive outer screen.).

After looking into several phones, I decided that my main qualification (well, I also eliminated any phone with less than 499 phonebook entries) was that I wanted mp3 ring-tones. For Verizon this limits us to:
LG VX7000
Moto A840 (?)
Moto V260
Moto V265
Moto V710

My secondary consideration is to have speaker phone capabilities, which knocks out the LG (although user reviews state that with the volume all the way up, it practically sounds like a speakerphone). Third, I want my phone to have reliable service anywhere I go, so I wanted a tri-mode that could pick up weak analog signals in the foothills or on rural stretches on interstate. This eliminates the A840.

The V260 is basically the V265 without the camera and I haven't seen it cheaper anywhere. So, my decision is down to the V265 and the V710.

The V710 is bluetooth enabled and has the capability for memory upgrades (it has 16MB internal to the V265's 3.8MB). Also, the LCD is bigger and the external LCD is in color and also larger. The camera is ~10x as good (but still not great) and has a flash. Since I keep my phone in a pants pocket most of the time, I actually think that the smaller greyscale external LCD will be more durable for me. Of course the V265 is cheaper too.

Verizon lists the V710 at $420 and the V265 at $170. eBay prices vary wildly, but typical (low) prices for the V710 are around $230 and (inexplicably) $205 for the V265--my target prices were $200 and $150, but after several days of monitoring bidding I'm still empty handed. Verizon is beginning a promotion on the V265 for new users, so the V710 gains points on the hip factor as well.

In the end, I'm prepared to suck it up and give my money to Verizon for the V265. As much as I'd like a V710 with a 128MB memory card (everybody gets to pick their ringtone!), I can't justify the price.

There are any number of programs to convert wav files to mp3 files. CD-Wave http://www.homepages.hetnet.nl/~mjmlooijmans/cdwave/ is a good program for breaking up wave files into smaller tracks. There is a specific format for the mp3 files (16 bit mono?). I understand that you can get around paying to upload them by changing the file extention to jpg, sending them as a picture message, and then changing the file extention back.

My new phone V265 from Verizon comes to 181.38 with tax (shipping included). Now I can stop going to eBay 10 times a day...

PS If you don't care about the speaker phone, analog... I've seen the LG-VX7000's going for as low as $153 on eBay. If you don't care about having a large phone book, the feature search guide at mobiledia.com also returns more than 10 other phones when searching only for CDMA (Verizon) and mp3 ringtones, so you will have to be more specific.

Yes, you can send yourself free ring tones, at least to the VX6000. You can use any MIDI file as a ringtone. Unfortunately the VX6000 doesn't play MP3s ("real music" ringtones) so you are stuck with polyphonic MIDI.......

I Don't know what VX6000 phone you are using, but you got ripped off, it CAN play MP3 ringtones. 4 of my friends have the phone.

Perhaps you weren't listening clearly or you were listening to music that sounds similar in midi. It does not supposrt mp3 or I would have it now.

Yeah, I really wanted to get the 7000, but I'm using a family plan, and my sister is at college in middlebury so she thinks she needs analog too (even though her friend with a 6000 says it's fine digital only) but anyways, shes being stubborn so I'm going to wait and see if they release a 7100, or I'll justt grab the 6100 icon_razz.gif

This is what I have been doing, and it works for me. I have Windows XP, an LG VX6100 phone through Verizon Wireless, and I have an active vzwpix account. I am using Goldwave 4.23 as my file editor.

What you have to do is edit any wav or mp3 file, save the file at 22 khz, 48 kbps, mono. After the file is saved, rename the file - changing the extension from wav or mp3 to MIDI...this is very important...change it to MIDI. Email the midi file to your cell phone via the vzwpix.com site (and have your vzwpix account activated. All you will pay for is the message upload to your phone (something like 25 cents each message unless you have an photo message plan).

It works! icon_cool.gif The length of the file has not mattered (so far), but I have kept the song clips under 25 seconds in length.

GOOD LUCK!!! icon_biggrin.gif

There have been some files that would not transfer to the phone through vzwpix....but reducing the clip's length fixed that, so there DOES appear to be a limit to lenth or file size...I'm betting file size. I'm still monkeying with it. In any case, most of my stuff uploaded fine, but filled my memory more than when I downloaded mp3s from Get It Now, so the purchased Get It Now files must be compressed more than the ones I've made myself.

Nope, I was wrong. There doesn't seem to be any benefit to reducing file size, though I do recommend keeping the clips under 25 seconds in length or under 100 KB in file size (by keeping the kps between 32 and 48 ) - simply for the faster upload to the phone.

My problem with running out of memory has nothing to do with file size. I'm limited to storing no more than 20 "picture" messages. Even though these are being sent as midi files, they were sent via vzwpix, so they are stored in the picture message memory.

Anyone know any way of moving them from the picture memory into the ringtones memory?
