wow, what a wonderful wealth of information in this thread. i am getting
ready to order some cell phones on a verizon family plan and have been
using this thread in my research. want a clamshell with a screen on the
outside. want to connect to my pc because i am one of those people who
refuse to pay verizon an extra 50 cents for anything. i was trying to
decide between the lg vx5200 and the vx5300. i have acquired datapilot
and bitpim softwate and see that the 5200 is supported by both but
the 5300 is not. so i figured i would go with the 5200. case closed. right?
well no. my teenage daughter likes ringtones that sound like actual songs,
not like midi keyboards. i see the 5300 supports mp3 but the 5200 says
polyphonic. i used an mp3 to ringtone app to make some ringtones with the
mmf extension and they sound like real songs when i play them on a
yamaha mid radio player that i downloaded to my pc. my question (finally) is
will they sound like real songs on the polyphonic 5200 or do i need the
5300. i think i would be sad with the 5300 since it is not supported by
datapilot and bitpim. any advice is greatly appreciated.

I recently upgraded to the A930 Samsung. After reading this thread I gained everything I needed to know about creating ringtones, converting ringtones and uploading ringtones. I have also discerned that some prepay type plans will not let you upload to your phone.

The Wal-Mart method no longer works. They have changed the access format from direct file access to .asf.

Here is what I have done and it is working just fine.

1. download and install "Audacity" if you cannot find it on the web you should not be doing your own ringtones anyway.

2. download Mp3 codec "Lame 3.96.1" you can find this on the Audacity site.

3. find an Mp3 you want to cut down and use as a ringtone.

4. load said mp3 into Audacity and edit it down to the ringtone you want. I would not recommend anything over 30 seconds (this is pushing it).

5. export edited ringtone as a .wav file

6. open .wav file in Sound Recorder and in FILE-PROPERTIES-CONVERT NOW I use the PCM format at 22.050Khz 16bit Mono settings. Click OK-OK and Save as "whatever.wav"

7. open this saved .wav in Audacity and export as .mp3 (for a 20 second file I get about 280k in size) if you need to bring it down consider short tones or a less robust format setting. Sound quality will suffer.

8. Change the file extention from .mp3 to .mid (windows will argue but tell it to frack off)

9. now the part that is hit or miss. You have to Email this to your phone from an email address that supports full file transfer and DOES NOT change formats or extentions. I have Comcast.net, I feel for you AOL users but I have yet to see anyone get through their filters.
Email to: xxxxxxxxxx@vzwpix.com (please make sure you have a valid PixPlace account)

10. File Size: I did some experimenting and was not able to get any file greater than 325K to go through without error. Unfortunately this is where my full 30 second tones hover just above.

11. phone specific: I was able to do this with my a670 and my current a930. Any other phone-mileage may vary. I open the message and the sound plays. I choose option to save My Sounds and when i'm changing ringtones it give me access to My Sounds-- Lo and Behold there is my convereted 20 second ringtone.

I hope this helps somebody, and again Mileage May Vary. So if this does not work for you, I'm sorry.

I have followed all instructions and when I change from wav extension to mid extension, the file will not play on computer nor will it be recognized by the phone. I have a samsung a950.

Have successfully copied other midi files from my computer to flash card, put card in phone, and save file as ringtone successfully. But cannot seem to convert mp3 or wav file to a mid file that will play anywhere.

Please advise.

Thanks,
Yoshia

Hey,
I have a LG phone by verizon and it won't let me set files in MY SOUNDS to my ringtones??
I tried going into my sound settings and going through my call ringtones, but even that doesn't work.
Does anyone know how I can get the files in MY SOUNDS to become my ringtones?

Please & Thank you icon_smile.gif
