You should try the DRM packager software, it might be that your network has restricted use of 'outside' songs as ringtones. They do that so that you have to buy their ringtones... Just Google for Free DRM packager.

Hi,

I have The V by LG, and I am trying to only put ONE ringtone that I have on my computer onto my phone. I downloaded it as an MP3 onto my C drive. I converted it to a smaller size file. I sent it to my phone and am having the same problem with it going into my Sounds folder. I don't know how to save this file as a .mid because everytime I right click on the file it doesn't give me that option. I'm not sure how to do it. And, even if I do save it as a .mid, I'm not sure that it will even go to my Ringtones folder instead of the sounds folder. Please someone help me, because I am so frustrated with Verizon!!!

It's easy to change the file name to midi but you have to have extensions turned on on your PC. Start by going to My Documents and in Tools click on Folder Options. Click the View tab and make sure that the box that says "Hide extensions for known file types" is UNCHECKED. Hit Apply and then OK. Now right click on your MP3 and hit rename and just change the extension to mid. If a box pops up telling you that the file can become unstable, click Yes anyway. Now you can send the file to yourself at yourcellnumber@vzwpix.com and go ahead and save the file to your Sounds folder. You can still use it as a ringtone. Just navigate to the number you want to use it for and change the default ringtone by navigating to your Sounds Folder (instead of your Ringtones folder) and selecting the file from there. It still works as a ringtone.

Finally, you can easily creat your rings tones and upload them for FREE!!

This process does require you to have a micro SD card and another USB device capable of reading the micro SD card with or with out the adapter that usually comes with them. This device can be a digital camera, PDA, memory card reader or a few other things I can't think of right now.

First of all, thanks to all who went before me and helped me get this far. This thread has been very helpful. I followed the previous directions in this thread and went a step further. I hope I'm returning the favor here.

These directions are start to finish.

1. Download 'Audacity Music Editor' http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
2. Download 'lame_enc.dll' http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/download.php?lame_encdownload0UIgSIa IfW
3. Install Audacity
4. Save lame_enc.dll to your 'c:\windows\system32' or 'c:\winnt\system32 directory'.
5. Launch Audacity, click Edit/Preferences. Click on File Formats in the new window. Click on the Find Library button. You'll get a long scary message, click YES. Copy and paste one of the following lines into the Find File dialog, depending on if you have a Windows or Winnt directory on your C: drive.

C:\Windows\System32\lame_enc.dll
C:\Winnt\System32\lame_enc.dll

Then click Open.
6. Select the radio button under 'When Exporting Tracks' that says Use Advanced Mixing Options (don't get scared, it's easy).
7. Make sure Uncompressed Export Format is set to WAV (Microsoft 16 bit PCM)
8. Press OK.
9. Drag and drop your MP3 into the Audacity window.
10. Play the file (serveral times), watching the timers at the bottom, to determine the START point of the 20 second clip you'd like to be your ring tone.
11. Set the 'Selection Start' to the begining time.
12. Set the 'End/Length' radio button to 'Length' and enter 20s in the fields below.
13. Press 'Ctrl' and 'T' on your keyboard at the same time or Click 'Edit/Trim' from the menus.
14. Click 'File/Export As/WAV' and save the file to a place you can locate later.
15. Go to the file, rename the file extension from .wav to .mid.

These next steps assume you've already formatted your micro SD card USING YOUR CELL PHONE.

16. Insert your micro SD card (an adapter may be required) into a device connected to your PC (memroy card reader, PDA, Camera, etc.)
17. Browse to the folder on the memory card labled 'my_sounds'.
18. Copy and paste your ring tone into the 'my_sounds' directory on the memory card.
19. Remove the memory card and insert it into your phone.
20. The a930 doesn't appear to allow you to set sounds on the memory card to be your ring tone, so you'll have to move it to the phones memory. Go to 'Menu/Tools/Memory/Card Memory/My Sounds'.
21. Select 'Options/Move'.
22. Mark the file that contains your ring tone and select 'Done'.
23. You'll see a confirmation about whether or not you'd like to move the file to your phone, select 'YES'.
24. Back out and go to Menu/Get It Now!/Get Tunes & Tones/My Sounds.
25. Select your file and press 'Options'.
26. Select 'SET AS' from the list and choose 'RING TONE' to make your sound the default ring, 'CONTACT ID' to assign to be the ring tone for a contact in your address book or 'ALERT' to set the sound to be your alert tone when you receive a message.

You're Done. Enjoy.

I have an SCH-a930. I can e-mail a tone to my phone and store it in "My Sounds" but when I go to "Call Sounds" to set it as a ringtone, it is missing from "My Sounds". Those dogs at Verizon make me want my old phone back! If anyone knows how to get past this, without the SD card, please advise. -Traumatini

I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to do ringtones for my Samsung A930 with my existing mp3's without spending ANY money except for a micro card and micro card reader. You don't have to email anything.

Here are DETAILED instructions that WILL work.

I'm assuming that you are copying your files while your micro card in in your card reader on your PC.

INSTALL mpTRIM

goto http://www.mptrim.com/ and download the free mptrim

Put mpTrim in a folder on your Desktop. It is not installed.

Need to set two parameters in mpTrim

ID3Tag Tab
Do you want an ID3v1 Tag - Set NO
Check Keep ID3v2 Tag if present - Check ON
File Tab
Uncheck "Add the length of track into the filename when using Save" or "Save As"

You are Done with the mpTrim Settings

EDIT YOUR NEW RINGTONES USING MP3 FILES

Double Click on mpTrim.exe to run the program.

Open an existing .mp3 file.

Trim from the end (or whatever) enough time to make the remaining file to be under 30 seconds.

You can figure this out by looking at the length in min/sec field.

Save As a new file with the same name but in a new folder Like MySounds

Change the .mp3 ending to be .mid

Remove all funny characters in the name like () Dash seems to be OK however

Copy the new .mid sounds to your SOUNDS folder on your SD/Mini Card which is on your phone...insert your card into your USB reader

Put your card back into your phone

ASSIGN SOUNDS TO RINGTONES

Select Settings and Tools
Sound Settings
Call SOunds
Call Ringtone
My Sounds

Here you can see the .mid files on your card
Check to see if you can PLAY the ringtones from this menu.
If not, then you did something wrong, otherwise continue.
Select the ringtone and OK
The ringtone should be assigned to that sound.
You can also assign ringtones to individual contacts using the contacts menu

SOME GOTCHAS

It seems like you need to have ID3v2 tag present. If you don't it won't work. You can see if you have a tag from the info presented by mpTrim on the opening page.

MOVE SOUNDS TO PHONE

this is optional. It moves the sounds to the phone. If you don't do this, you need to always have the card inserted in the phone.

Options - Get TUnes and Tones

My SOunds

Scroll and select new .mid file

Options - Move to Phone

Thank you gentlemen! I received my micro SD card today. I used your instructions and set my new ringtone without any problems. For thirty dollars, I will have unlimited ringtones. The one I set today was worth the price. I will be loading music with it as well. Thank you again! -Trauma
