All LG8100 please read:(this will work for all other phones that BitPim will recognize)

1) Phone
2) USB cable(I recommend buying the VCAST Music Pack from Verizon for $40, it comes with a USB Cable and a CD w/Driver installation software)
3) Drivers (w/ CD or downloadable from Verizon.com)
4) Ringtones(any format will suffice i.e MP3,QPC,MID,WAV,WMA)
5) BitPim
6) Logic ( why? take everything you've read before and forget! Now just read and follow directions)

First, make all the ringtones you want,as long or short, as big or small, and in any format you like. Assuming you've installed BitPim and the drivers for your phone, plug the USB into your phone, then into your computer. Now, open BitPim. Press the "find phone" button, look to the bottom right of the program window, it will show if it is or has detected your phone. Once it has, click on the "get phone data" button. Make sure ONLY the Ringers(Ringtones) button is green on the LEFT column, then click OK. This will load all My Ringtones, My Music and My Sounds into BitPim from your phone. Open the Media "tree", by clicking on the +/- next to the icon labeled Media, this will open a "tree" with video, images, sounds and ringers icons. Click on the Ringers icon. In the right window, it will show all ringtones on your phone that were in My Rigntones, BUT, it may be just EMPTY( like mine was). Who cares!! Now, RIGHT CLICK on the Ringers icon and select "Add to ringers". Find you ringtones and add them one by one!! If you have any ringtones that you've saved in My Sounds (from all earlier tries with emails and walmart methods), click on the Sounds icon. Choose a sound file and RIGHT CLICK, then select Move, then select ringers!! NOW, click on the "Send Phone Data Button" and make sure ONLY Ringers(Ringtones) is highlighted on the left column. This may take a bit if you added a bunch of ringtones, just wait it out!! FIN!! Open you phone, go to My Rigntones, and cream your pants!! They will all be highlighted in Gold/Yellow, but i'm not sure what that distinction is from Green. One minor note: if it asks you to CONVERT any of your rigntones just before it uploads them, just click CONVERT, or you can mess with the settings, but the default ones are just fine.

EVERYONE. You are all making this ridiculously hard! There is a website called www.mobile17.com which will send ringtones to your phone for the price of a text message!
First, you have to make sure you have the song you want on your computer, then go to the website and register and activate your account. Choose the free option and then find the file on your computer, tell it when to start recording and when to stop (from 3 to 40 seconds long) and submit. Your ringtone will arrive somewhere from 3-10 hours later depending on how many people are using the site at the time you press submit. You will recieve a pix/flix message and then save the sound to My Sounds and you are good to go!

Rediculously hard, but absolutely free! icon_w00t.gif

Okay so it took me a few hours to figure out. But the end result is that I've got free personalized ringtones with only a few minor concerns. I converted to .mid files and put them onto my memory card into the mysounds folder, stuck the card back into my phone and VOILE! They were there. But, when I go into 'My Sounds' on the phone to play the ringers, for some reason it takes a while before they play (like, 10 seconds). Wierd. Anyone got a clue why this would happen and should I even worry about it?

I have read this entire thread and STILL haven't gotten an answer to my question.

I have an LG VX5200 and i have already gotten the sound to my phone, it is only 14KB and when i recieved the pix message with the sound i saved the sound, the sound is now in my sounds and my phone doesn't have any options for me to put it as a ringtone. The sound is a .wav file. I keep going to Get Now, Get Tunes and Tones, My Sounds, then Options then my options are:
1. Send
2. To PIX place
3. Rename
4. Lock
5. Erase All
6. Sound Info

HELP!

or if i go to Settings and Tools, sounds, Call Sounds, Call Ringtone, then All Calls, it takes me to my ring tones not my sounds!

Any ideas?!?

GoScots:

Try changing the file extension to .mid instead of .wav (that is if your phone stores "my sounds" as midi files. If it stores them as somthing else, change the file extension to whatever it needs to be.)

If you don't know how to do that, this most helpful tidbit was posted by Cel a few pages previous:

"It's easy to change the file name to midi but you have to have extensions turned on on your PC. Start by going to My Documents and in Tools click on Folder Options. Click the View tab and make sure that the box that says "Hide extensions for known file types" is UNCHECKED. Hit Apply and then OK. Now right click on your MP3 and hit rename and just change the extension to mid. If a box pops up telling you that the file can become unstable, click Yes anyway."

It works for me if I first make my ringer in Audacity, export as an .mp3 to My Music (on my PC not on my phone memory card), change the file exstension to .mid, and move the ringer to My Sounds on my phone memory card. (it works, ignore me last post *^_^*). You just have to figure out what kinds of files your phone will store in your My Sounds folder and make your ringers into those kinds of files. This took me forever to figure out (yay for trial and error!) but I think I finally got it.

There are also a couple of links for LG talk forums posted on page 25 of this thread. I didn't read them, as I have a Samsung, but they might help you out. icon_smile.gif

I used mobile17 and I still cannot set the song I had them send me as a ringtone. I have an LG vx9800 (the original V) and the song mobile17 sent me shows up on My Sounds, but is not in the ringtones selection in Call Sounds. Any ideas?
