The sales rep said there is a difference between GAIT and GSM. I bought a Motorola V400 phone and signed up for the Nation GSM 850 w/ Rollover plan. The SIM installed is a GAIT 32k for the East Coast. Shouldn't I have a GSM SIM installed? This may seem like a stupid question, but all this is new to me and I had a hard time comprehending all of the cell phone speak my sales rep used. I guess I don't understand the difference. Thanks!

The GAIT plans are only for the GAIT phones. These phones work on GSM, TDMA, and Anolog signals. Your V400 only works on GSM singnals. As long as your phone is working properly I would'nt worry about the GAIT 32k Sim card.

Yeah, if it works then let it. Normally GAIT means they account have a second number on it to allow for the sim to recognize a GSM phone's IMEI and the TDMA/ANALOG part of the GAIT phone. When you make calls on GSM it checks to see what sim # and all its codes, and the phone IMEI. On TDMA is uses the ESN, so GAIT Phones have both numbers. By using a GAIT Chip doesn't mean much, all SIMs can be used in GSM only phones, even GSM only chips can be used GAIT. So don't worry about it.

yes, you can just put the sim card that you have in the t720 into the v400. your coverage will be Cingular's GSM coverage

Actually, I'm a little surprised you and your wife can have different phones (one GAIT and one GSM only) and share minutes. Cingular told me I couldn't do that. If they block the TDMA/Analog and ESN portions, though...
Also the GSM footprint is significantly smaller than the combined GSM/TDMA/AMPS (GAIT) footprint. In terms of POP's, the GSM coverage is likely anywhere you want to go; in terms of land area, there's still a lot of non-GSM country out there. Here are the maps displaying the differences from Cingular's website:

What if I have a gait phone and sim with a gait plan and put the gait sim in a gsm phone? Will this cause problems. I have put my sim in a gsm phone and it works fine. Will this cause billing problems?

I just got a cingular gsm v400. I had a gsm nokia 8290 which i had unlocked from voicestream. I was able to use it on ATT. Now I tried to use the cingular sim in the nokia and it does not work! Does this mean that cingular does something to the sim so you can only use it on cingular locked phones? Will i ever be able to live the dream of owning my own cell phone that will work with any provider?
please cellular tech gods help me to understand Thanks in advance to thise who wil awnser my questions

I don't know for sure but there are different sims with Cingular. Different sims for different packages and areas of the country. Cingular don't care if you use an unlocked phone or not. When I call them they are pretty good to talk about using other phones. They will just warn you about the phone not being under warranty with them and such. You may just need to buy a new sim and let them program it????? Let me know how you come out..... If it's a Cingular phone you have i'm sure they will try to help...
