If youve bought the phone from new and it already has a service provider. The phone will be locked to this SP.
I think the only way to check if it has been unlocked is to try it with other people's sim cards. If they do not work you will just get a simple message. No harm will be caused.
Hope this helps

The're 3 possibilities:
Mobile has SIM-Lock (sometimes used with Prepaid-Bundels): The Mobile only works with the SIM you've bought with the Handy.
Mobile has Net-Lock (usally for Prepaid-Bundles): You can use every SIM, but only from one SP. e.g. Orange.
Not locked...

on your joystick do the following. --><-- are left and right joystick movement.
-->*<--<--*<--*
this will bring you to service menu. now goto service info then simlock. it will tell you which are locked and unlocked.

OK, I followed your instructions and Network shows locked with the #1
all of the other 3 (Network Subset, Service provider and corporate) show unlocked with #1
What does that mean?
