I bought my own phones that are cingular gsm compatible and wanted to switch to their new gsm plan which takes advantage of the 9.99 per phone option and someone at cingular over the phone told me all I needed to do was go to one of the stores and have them program the new sim cards in the phones and everything would be great. What a bold face lie!!!!!!!!!!! Went to the main store after getting the run around with about 8 different stores and the main store here in Little Rock AR. said they can not and will not program another providers phone on their network even if it is compatable and unlocked. I told them I have seen where it is done all the time and they said I don't believe you and I even talked to the manager and he said yes that was correct that it is policy because of the problems they were having with billing or some bull like that. So now I will have to sell my phones and try to buy some that say cingular on them what a pain in the butt.

Are you on a GSM plan now? Are the phones you bought unlocked? If so, just pop your SIM card into the new phone. There really is no programming to be done, except setting up MMS and WAP if you want those. I have an OEM unlocked V600 from Europe and all I did was put my SIM card in it and it works fine.

While I agree with the post preceding mine, the other item you may want to consider is the frequency on which the phone operates. Cingular's network in Arkansas is on the 850mHz spectrum. Until recently, phones didn't support 850 (i.e., a "tri-band" phone is 900/1800/1900 where 900 and 1800 are used internationally, and the 1900 was the frequency GSM was offered on in the US). In short, if they gave you a SIM card for a phone that didn't support the frequency they operate on in AR, Cingular would be paying roaming charges to T-Mobile or ATTWS every time you made a call; you wouldn't pay them b/c the rate plan doesn't have roaming in Arkansas, but they would... (Can you really blame them if that's the case?)

I'm guessing the reason you didn't do (take the SIM card out of your existing phone) as the post before me suggested is that you're currently on a TDMA plan. If that's the case, Cingular is always offering free phones... Sign up with a free phone, and pull the SIM card out of it, and put it in your phone.

You can sell the free phone (its got to be worth something). If you get a Nokia, I can likely get you the unlock code so that it can be used with anyones network, thereby increasing its value...

I posted this on one other topic, so excuse the repetition. I am just so mad about this subject. Anybody else had problems with Cingular in this manner regardig east coast GSM and west coast GSM?

You say Cingular doesn't want you to use non-Cingular phones.... but did you know that I recently moved from east coast (NC, GSM) to west coast (San Francisco, CA GSM) and Cingular west coast office and east coast office both confirm that the phones are LOCKED for their area. Can you believe this? So far, after 1 week of pleading, no results or satisfaction from Cingular. I have been told to buy a new SIM card in CA ($27) and a new phone.
