Hi guys
A couple of things firstly, I have version 04.01 on my 6100, is this the most current firmware? Secondly if its not the newest. How do i upgrade it?
I have PC Suite and a data cable, is that a start?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

As far as i know, there is no newer firmware.
And if there is a new one, you only will get it at a Nokia Care Center near you. During the term of guarantee it is for free (and that's for sure!).
There are ways, to do it at your own, but it's to risky for your phone and you will lost your guarantee. Also you need more than a normal Data-Cable.

I saw from another forum that the latest firmware for 6100 is 4.70, but I am not sure this is true. My friends' phones are all on v4.01

Firmware is the software that has been loaded onto your phone. The later version can sometimes fix a problem (bug) or add additional features.
Take for example, an earlier firmward version on 7210/6610 does not allow you to choose ringtones for 'caller group', except for those tones that come with the phone. The newer version does.

Check with your local Nokia care centre to find out the version they have. Currently, version 4.74 is already out. Sometimes, the roll-out of newer version can be a little slow in certain part of the world.
For firmware upgrade, just send your phone back to the care centre. They do it for free here, but I am not sure if they are going to charge you at your local care centre. Check with them when you call to ask about the firmware version.

@kieranegan
Nokia Care Centre will do it for free (provided you are still under warranty and have a receipt). The centre is in the city somewhere, you'll have to look it up.
Best to give them a call and see what version they have for your phone so you dont waste a trip to the city.

I happen to be so lucky that I live 5 min. on foot from a Nokia Care Centre, my question is:
I ordered my Nokia 6100 from an internet mobileshop in Denmark where I live.... will the Nokia Care Centre upgrade my firmware for free, eventhough I did'nt buy my cellphone at the Nokia Care Centre!?
Thanx in advance!
