I have been playing with m3u's today, first time i have tried an its very easy thing to do.
I have got a 256mb card an too many songs on there in the root so i needed some play lists.
If you havn't got MobiMB yet i suggest you get it. It makes life alot easier. Also a car reader speeds things along.
I made several directories in my mem card such as dance rnd etc. The loaded up the files as appropriate.
So thats all the files with no MP3's in the root.
File > New Playlist. This will create a m3u in a playlist folder, to which you have no access to through the handset. Simply drag and drop files from each folder into the pink playlist area.
I have a few playlists goin on at the moment. Main reason i needed them is so my girlfriends crap music doesnt get mixed up with mine.
To access or change play lists go to music player and :
Options > track lists > options > change track lists
Hope this is helpful.

I got mp3 files in subfolders on the MMC.
Its a slow business but it works.
Create an empty playlist in the Nokia Audio Manager and transfer it to the phone.
When its been transferred, select it (in the playlist folder in the phone memory) and press "add". You should be presented with a list of all mp3s on the MMC, select and add.
Works for me on my 6230.

Many thanks to you guys.
When I've got some more spare time I'll push my Sarge to hda2 and install Windoze on hda1 - only to use the mp3 player of my 6230...
It seems to be the only chance. This is so frustrating, especially because it should work fine if only the player would support m3u or pls files on the mmc. But obviously the peole at NOKIA are not able to implement it or they just don't want to see this problem. That's really poor. Maybe they are bribed by Microsoft.
I'd like to know, what a Mac user would do? He would buy an iPod?

I'm using 6.2.017 from the nokia site. Transfer Music on the PC Suite takes you to Nokia Audio Manager which allows you to define .m3u playlists and transfer them to a hidden folder on the phone. The playlists controls the play order can refer to files in sub-folders - hurrah!

Hi, I was wondering this too. I have an MMC card reader but no way of connecting the actual phone to the pc. I'd rather not buy a bluetooth dongle just so I can change the order of tracks in the media player.
I only have one album on my MMC at the moment, and I don't mind keeping stuff in the root directory, I just wish it would play the tracks in the right order. They all have ID tags with track numbers in, the filenames all start with the track number, but the phone seems to put them in any random order it wants.
EDIT: I remembered a little mp3 player I used to have, it was only 64mb, had no screen and so just played tracks in order, plugged straight into the usb port. Anyway, I found that the mp3 player played tracks in the order in which they were placed on it, and apparently when windows drags and drops files it does them in any old order. So I ended up having to drag an album across track by track, and this works with the 6230 as well. If you're just using a card reader or something like myself this method should work. It's far from ideal of course, but if you only have simple needs it can at least keep you going until you find a more permanent method.

Firmware 5.24 and above recogniize songs stored in sub folders on an MMC, even 1GB. However, they are plaied in the order they are saved on the MMC, not in order of the file name (01-songtitle.mp3) or even id3 tag. So the only way of organizing your music is by using playlists.
If you are not a windows user an therefore can not use the nokia audio suite, the following may help you:
Playlists can easily be created using any playlist creator or manually.
The format of m3u files (mp3 playlists) is simple
first line: #EXTM3U
following lines: names of files with sub folders.
The MMC is recognised by the cell phone as drive B, so the file names must be:
B:\subfolder1\file1.mp3
B:\subfolder1\file2.mp3
etc.
You can then copy the playlist onto your phone using the program Gammu: www.mwiacek.com/gsm/soft/gammu.html. Download Version 1.00.10 or above (the files are currently in the developing folder, not yet in the stable folder).
An explanation on how to copy the playlists onto the phone can be found in this thread:
http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.drivers.gammu/2121
Enjoy your Nokia 6230 as a fully functional mp3 player!
