Hi,
Well i am trying to connect my Nokia6820 to my PC running on Windows XP(file system-NTFS) from past 3 days, but still no success. I have read nearly all the forums posted on this on internet and tried every possible combination but no luck!
I bought a USB data cable(which has a chip mounted in the center of the cable, guess..KQ2303) that connect pop-up port to the COM port, and got a cd with it which has the driver "PL-2303 DRIVER".
I installed the driver and enabled the COM Port (Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm port). Till here everything is fine!
Problem:
----------------
1.Now i installed the NOKIA PC suite supplied NOKIA, but it doesnt find the phone ("No phones Connected").
2.After searching a lot, a website suggested that first install the PL-2303 driver, then the NOKIA DKU-5 driver(which i d/l from NOKIA site), and then the PC Suite, but it didnt worked that way either.
3.Installed just the Nokia DKU-5 driver and Nokia pc suite also dont solve the problem. (the usb device dont locate the driver from Nokia DKU-5)
4.I have done all the things suggested in the nearly all the forums on net like to --,uninstall everything and install again,-- restart after every installation, --and dont plug in the cable before installation, --select only the serial port connection in the connection manager, --select both "serial port and USB connection".. and everything as suggested in by different websites. but still no success!
The only good thing is that when i d/l latest oxygen Phone manager from its website (OPM2), it was able to recognise the connection and it found my phone Nokia6820. But as you all know that its a trial version, so hardly you can do something from it.
I guess i have described it completely and it would be sufficient for you to guess what is wrong, if you have anything more to ask just post it, i will reply immediately.
In short the questions:
"""Hey is it something like that i cannot use a prolific usb-to-serial comm port to connect to Nokia PC suit?, do i need a original DKU-5 cable supplied by nokia?, or i can work with what i have at present?"""
Pls:Sorry that i wrote pretty lengthy but cant help it, my brain is puzzled, hope you understand.
Thanks for reading.
I will be waiting for the solution to my problem and hope that i will get it soon.

Nokia PC Suite does only work with Bluetooth, IrDA or the original DKU-5 cable.
OPM2 and MobiMB do work with such cheap cables.
There are some cables out there, which are stated to be compatible and work with PC Suite, but I won't bet on it.
A little research gives me the hint that your cable should be one of these compatible cables... as we see... it doesn't work...
I would always recommend IrDA since it's cheap and compatible to every phone that has IrDA...
And don't forget: PC Suite necessarily has got to be installed on the same harddisk drive on which your Windows is installed! Otherwise PC Suite won't work.

how do i tell if the DKU-5 is an original? i think i've been conned.
i brought my cable to a shop for testing. the next day he said it is bitten in half by mice. and i was foolish enough to not ask for proof. (he might have said he tossed it away anyway)
he replaced it with another cable but it doesnt seem to be letting NPCS to work. however, i've also NEVER tried my "bitten" DKU-5 cable with NPCS before so i cant say whether it actually worked.

How to know if the dku-5 cable is original:
1. For starters, u could buy it frm a nokia retail store.
2. Check for a certain nokia hologram(Do they still use it?).
3. Open the box and see if there is a manual and CD(for drivers) in it.
4. Wen i bought a dku-5, it came in a nice cardboard box with the manul and CD.
5. The price. Imitations are way cheaper.

Hi and thanks to all the people who replyied.
Well i have got the solution to the problem. Its just that if you are using Windows XP , you need to download the latest version of Nokia PC suite (Version 6), Actauly, the problem was that its the mistake of Nokia. The PC suite (Ver. 5.6) they supplied with the Phone only works with WIndows 98 (as against mentioned on the cd that its compatible with Windows XP).
So, just go and download the latest version PC suite 6 from nokia website and it will recognise your phone Nokia6820 on XP.
(Rest of the procedure is same i.e., d/l the drivers and then the suite)
I thank Bjoern for his suggestion. Irda is a very good idea and its realy cheap if you
have a onboard Irda port. Before your post i never thought about Irda seriously and when i looked, i found it onboard my mainboard. But still you cannot get it working if you are using Nokia PC suite version 5.6 (supplied along with phone), if you are having XP as your OS.
So the problem is not with the cable but with the Incorrect information by nokia.
I hope that now noone had to post their problem related to connecting PC suite with NOKIA6820. Just read my problem and the solution, it will get you working.
Thanks.

PC Suite 5.6 should work with Windows XP.
But afaik to much people had trouble with Windows XP and these older versions (5.1 worked perfectly with my Windows XP) Nokia decided to make a special Windows XP/2000 version.
The balancing act between working with Windows XP/2000 but also working with WIndows 98/ME was apparently too big.
But I justed looked up at Nokia.com... are you sure it was 5.6? Because Nokia suggests 5.8 for the 6820! Which also is the first version which has support for the 6820!
