Hi. I have a T610 that I bough about 8 months ago in the Washington DC area. My service provider is T-Mobile. I am going to Austria for 2 months over the summer, so I bought it mostly for its GSM capability.
Here are my questions.
1. Is it necessary to unlock this phone when I take it to my country? I know I will need to change the SIM card, but will just buying the SIM be enough?
2. What exactly would unlocking the phone let me do that I can't now?
3. I've heard that T-Mobile will unlock the T610 if you live in the US and have owned it for more than 3 months. I assume they would do this for free. Can I do this at a Simply Wireless store, or do I have to send it in?
4. Once it is unlocked, could someone point me to some step by step directions showing exactly how I would put in the new Austrian SIM and change the settings, get my new phone #, ect.?
By the way, I dont plan on using the phone for playing games, downloading new stuff, or using Bluetooth or IR. I just want to be able to go to my country and have a new phone number within a couple days. Thank you very much for your help.

First you need to check if your phone is unlocked yet. If its unlocked, you'll have no problem using it in your country. If its locked, you will only be able to use it with T-mobile.
In the stand by screen press > * < < * < * , service info, simlock.
If the lock besides Network is closed, that means your phone is locked, it wll be open if your phone is unlocked.

If you send me your IMEI, I will call T-mobile and see if they will send me an unlock code for you.
I'm just being nice and I wanna see how it works...

Thanks very much for your offer, but I think I can do it myself. I emailed T-Mobile a few times and they say I can unlock it if I call a certain number and they send the code. You probably couldn't do it anyway because T-Mobile makes you enter the last part of your social secuirity number before you even talk to anyone. Thanks again for the help, I will let you know if it works out.

Hi, if you have that number to call T-Mobile handy, could I get it from you?
If you have time, could you explain the process of how to do this once you are in another country?

please dont use mobiledia to promote any external sites, regarding the unlocking there are ways that it can be done urself, however, UNLOCKING/FLASHING/UPDATING YOUR PHONE URSELF INVALIDATES UR WARRANTY, IT IS ALWAYS ADVISED TO TAKE YOUR PHONE TO A APPROVED SERVICE CENTRE, THE UPDATING IS CARRIED OUT UNDER WARANTY!!
