my dad is as cheap as you are (no offense) and hes so stingy on giving away his credit info.. if you just wanted a phone, try getting those pre-paid phones that doesnt ask for deposits and stuff... my dad did that @ verizon and hes fairly satisfied but the thing is, they dont have any fancy nice phones, just the ugly ones.

Stay away from pre paid phones, you will end up spending way more money than a small deposit that you get back in a year. Sprints highest deposit is usually only $125. To be honest with you it would be a good investment as cell phones can generate really good credit, just as long a you pay your bills on time, just dont mess that up, or you can say goodbye to ever having a cell phone again. Also, you may be surprised that sprint might not charge a deposit to you, I have had many customers that had no credit, get away without a deposit. Try and find out, but Sprint would definitely be the way to go with no credit. Good luck. | ziggycityz wrote: | does sprint require a customer to make a deposit when they sign up for service? I've never had a cell phone before and i just turned 18 which means i have NO credit history...i tried to get a verizon phone but they said i had to give them 400$ and i said no....does sprint do the same thing? |

If you think you want a cellphone, you can have the rep 'run' your application and see if they are going to require a deposit. My friend and I were at Best Buy and he was interested in a MPX-220 from Cingular, but stated there would be no way in the world he could pass a credit check from Cingular or whoever BB use's for cellphone approvials. Well, he filled out the application, and it turned out he was approved for TWO cellphones! - He didn't get the phone, but it eased his mind knowing that he had that option if he wanted to use it.

First I would like to say Vision in not 10.00 a month it is 15.00 a month unless you had to 2 months for free and you call to cancel some agents offer it as what is called a cstat offer and that is 10.00 a month as a retention offer only.
Next deposit the credit checks are done though a company called Lightbridge most all deposits are 125.00 if you pay 200.00 deposit that is because of one of 2 things you have really poor credit or you had service with Sprint before and went into write off status with your old account generally I have seen people with no credit and people with a recent bankruptcy have no deposit and it is refunded after 12 months as a credit to your bill not a check mailed to you unless you stop service then it is used to pay your remaining balance then any remaining moneys are paid by check sprint by far has the least amount of deposit than any other mobile company in the country not including cricket or metro which will shut off your service if you don’t pay by a certain time of the month and their calling area is only the city you live in.
Many companies ask for a deposit some gas companies and telephone companies and electric companies even rental properties so sprint doesn’t have the corner on this market
FYI I had to pay a deposit on my account with Sprint it sucks but that is the way of free market in this country.

Scott 9710 you are right vision is 15.00 unless you call to cancel it. My bad I forgot that I was going to cancelit when they said 10.00. I just got a PPC6601 with the megabyte plan and I dont need no stinkin vision any more. When the 6600 comes out if it has a decent camera I'll set pictures up on Yahoo. I imagine it will be some years before they come out with a 5 mega pixel camera.

Actually, the best way to build a good scredit score is to have 5 - 10 credit cards. They can have a low limit, say $300.00- $500.00 dollars. Use only one and max it out, paying more than the minimum due each month. Your debt to income ratio will reflect a better score. This is recommended by all of the top financial advisors, including Suze Orman. This is what I do now...
Just a suggestion. With the credit cards you have to be careful. The temptation to use them is difficult to resist, but the debt to income ratiois a very important guideline. Also, check to see who has been looking at your credit score. The more inquiries, the more you have against you.
You can get your credit reports free now, but will have to pay for your score.

Don't give up your vision plan. The megabyte plan only covers usage of the phone as a modem. If you surf the web on the phone without the vision service, you'll be charged $.01 per KB. Also, the greatest deposit we charge at Sprint is $250 per line. It is returned in your 11 month of service in good standing as a credit towards your bill.
