your reception problem lies within the t68i itself. the whole t68 series was a joke. they suck. the reception is horrible, and only gets worse with age, because of the wear and tear, just get a decent phone man, thats the only way u can improve the signal.
get a nokia 6610, hehe icon_biggrin.gif i love that phone.

I've personally tried ALL major 3-watt amplifiers on the market. The only one my company sells at this time is the Signal Reach SA200 dual band. We've tested these devices mostly on Cingular's TDMA service, but have used on Verizon CDMA, Cricket CDMA 1900, AT&T TDMA, and Cingular GSM. They work if you need one. We advise to use and external antenna adapter and quality external antenna to start.

2 questions (hope they are not to elementary):
1. Would anyone know of a reputable source for such a boost antenna? I googled and got a ton of souces, but no idea which are quality.

2. For home use, does this require being plugged into a power source and connected physically to the antenna? (You alluded to less stellar performance of "inductive" antennas which sounds like it would not require being tied to a wire, but I am guessing that a 3 watt power booster does.)
Thanks.

"Inductive" means two wire coils in close proximity so that their magnetic flux fields interact. An electrical current in one coil will induce a magnetic field which will interact with the other coil and induce a "sympathetic" electrical current in that coil. That is more-or-less how the stick on window antennas in car vehicles work - you don't need to drill a hole for a cable. You have the antenna on the outside with a coil in the base, and the "receiver" stuck on the other side of the glass, also with a coil. The window antenna is also a good indicator of the distances involved. So yes - if you use this setup your phone will have to be tethered to the antenna with a cable.

You won't get good inductive coupling with cell phones simply because they were not designed to accept inductive coupling. There is no receptor coil in the cellphone, so any inductive coupling is incidental and not optimized. That is probably tried on phones without an external antenna connector.

Furthermore, antennas should not be grounded, so that information was correct. Unfortunately that we the only correct info the salesman gave. I would expect an antenna booster (stick on film) to shield a phone's internal antenna and therefor provide worse reception. The theory behind these things are that the stick on is an antenna of sorts, and provides an inductive coupling to the cell phone's antenna, thereby increasing antenna gain. As I've pointed out above, most cell phones are not designed with inductive coupling in mind, which is just one reason why these things won't work. They sold similar things in the last century, but they called it "Snake Oil" then icon_biggrin.gif.

Also, with the "3W antenna booster", the 3W is referring to transmit power, so it will increase your power to the tower. It probably also has a high gain pre-amp for incoming signals, which is why you get an improvement in your signal strength. I bet if you just get a good fixed antenna (which you need with the 3W boosters in any case), you'll get a noticeable increase in signal streng without having to use the booster.

I have a Motorola v551 and I get a good signal when I am in town,But out where I live its a whole different story, because no matter what kind of phone you have(Motorola,Nokia,Sony Ericson Etc.) the signal will be poor.I Installed a Car kit with an external ant, that helped but not alot.I purchased a Signal Reach SA200 3 Watt Booster that works for GSM and PCS.Well now I can talk to anyone whever I am.I always have at the worst 3 Bars of signal but most of the time 4-5 bars.I chose the Sgnal Reach 3 Watt booster because the local installers use it here and also guarantee it.It sure sold me,and I would recommend this booster to anyone who has a signal problem. They even make a booster for Nextel users, just make sure you get the right booster for your type of phone and service. icon_cool.gif

Hey

SO -- i was reading what everyone had to say -- I am still a bit confused!

I have the new sidekick 3 -- and I used to get poor reception at my apartment with my razor -- but now I get none icon_sad.gif

I am confused cuz I dont think I have an external antena! I just want somthing that I could plug in, in my apartment, to that while I am home I have better reception......

If someone could tell me what to buy -- and maybe an site to buy it, that would be saving my life ::literally cuz I dont get reception and cant talk to anyone::

They have these 3 watt amplifiers of different kinds some are designed to be mounted in car and some are to be mounted like in the home I beleive some can be connected physcially to the phone some do not I don't think. and they all say you have to have some signal outside or very near your house they don't give you signal where there isn't any. if you get a weak signal very near or outside your hosue t hese things will work.
