sorry about the newbie question.. but the answer doesnt seem to be in the glossary.
i want to buy a cell phone and it seems to be a tad cheaper on ebay, however some of them say "unlocked" beside it..
what does it mean when a phone is unlocked?

It means that the phone is a contract fone and was "locked" to a provider, i.e. b4 being unlocked, the fone could only be used with that service provider only.
A locked fone cannot accept sims frm any other providers except the one to which it is locked to.
So wen the fone is unlocked, it means that it can be used with any sim card.

Something I wrote a month ago:
| Bjoern wrote: | A phone can be locked to a SIM card or to a network.
All "Pay as you go" (or PrePaid) "contracts" come with a phone which is locked to the SIM (and maybe some are "only" network locked)
.
Some phones which come with a normal contract ain't locked (in Germany only PrePaid phones are locked).
But in some countries the provider makes a network lock, so the phone can only be used with his network. This is to prevent the buying of a cheap phone with a new contract, but using it with you old one.
Unlocking means, you deactivate/remove this lock. It's generally illegal to do so.
Only by let your provider unlock your phone is legal.
As example: in Germany you can unlock your prepaid phone after 2 years for free. If you want to let them unlock your phone before this, you've got to pay 100 Euro.
In general: after the expiring of your contract it's for free.
I know, there is a third kind of lock, but I've got no idea at the moment which one. |

still having the same intermittant network detection.......
but i think it is unrelated to my flashing.......
when ever it shows no service and i check my battery by the code
*#0bat# my batt temp is something incredibly high like 75-90 degree celcius
this happens generally after playing Java games ( i downloaded a 22 game pack flash from c100-club.ru i.e. i have in all 22 java games rt.now on my phone)
i had the battery problem even before flashing but it never caused a disturbance in network detection...only thing that happened was cell would turn off after warning..but the batt temp never rose so high(though i do not feel as if it is that high by touching!)
is this a problem in the battery or phone or the java games are sucking so much power to cause the batt to go haywire...pls advice
abhishta...what would a c100 battery cost me in mumbai? ..approx

That's why you never should flash your phone on your own...
And no offence, but... HAHAHA!
And you are in the wrong forum!
