I think the coverage here in Iowa is wonderful. Just a few dead spots now and then, but barely. Verizon's coverage isn't so good in Michigan though. Sounds like Alltel is a winner for Michigan!

from the CEO of Verizon, interview with San Francisco news editors: http://www.muniwireless.com/archives/000646.html
"It's rediculous to expect reception in homes, office buildings & elevators" according to Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg . I guess we do not need the convenience of usable cell coverage, that most of Europe has, such as cell reception in subways, basements, behind walls. Maybe that's what the 'can u hear me now' guy is doing in those TV commercials, walking outside to get reception!
No wonder we are so far behind the rest of the world in cell coverage with such 'visionaries' as Mr. Seidenberg.

Yeah that was a pretty dumb statement for a major company CEO to make. But in responce to his statement, I do have great service in my home, throughout my home as well as in my basement. I get service in underground subway systems, and I usually have a signal in elavators. I guess it just depends on where you are. I'm in Washington DC.

Well i for one, work for vzw. That guy your talking about only does verizon communications, and if you keep up with it, verizon comm has no affect on vz wireless, and yeah, no cell phone provider in the us can guarentee indoor covgerage. Unless you have a tower on top of your house, which we do at the corp office so i get to ride in the elevator and still talk . CDMA will always be better than GSM in quality and coverage. If you live 6mi from a tower, you cant expect full service. Thats like having DSL and living 3mi from the box. Your gonna get crappy speed... If you dont have VZW in your area, blame the FCC... not us.

You should check your 'facts' before you spout! For 4 years I believed that crap when I had Verizon, with 3 towers 4-6 miles from my house, couldn't keep a signal if my life depended on it. Well, I got rid of Verizon and got Cingular, similar in that there are 2 towers roughly 6 miles ffrom my house, with a different result. You know what? It actually works! I don't have to charge the phone twice a day anymore, because it trying to lock onto a signal. I now charge once every 5 days. We're no closer to the towers but these ones work. Oh yea, and they also work inside the house, not just outdoors. Don't attempt to cover your mistake, with the 'roaming on other GSM signals' either, cause where we live they are non-existant.
I never minded paying for service, as long as I could use it. I just don't appreciate paying for service that doesn't work. Cingular fixes issues on the first call too, not like Verizon, where when I finally cancelled there was still a list of unresolved issues, that were given lip service, but no attempt was made to do anything about them.
SO get off your soapbox, and take off the blinders. It's not as simple as you think.

Well what do you expect? All carriers have ups and downs, and it truly comes down to where you live. Verizon Started with the merger of Bell ATLANTIC mobile and some other comp. Bell atlantic is straight out of the atlantic/northeast states so that's where verizon works best. Verizon has no competition in new york, it's always verizon, always. And even if there was competition it would lastly be from Cingular. Cingular started with the merger of Bell South and SBC. Cingular will work best in the south, thats just the way it is. Would you wear a red sox hat to a yankees game? no! So why should verizon improved reception in the south when so many people have trust in cingular?

FYI, I live in New York. I didn't have any problems with either carrier, once I left the state, all the way to Florida.

I work for Alltel and I would like to state that all of you have several VALID points. I agree that the CEO of Verizon wasn't thinking when he made that comment about their own service. Eventhough, NO service provider can guarantee 100% coverage...since the merger with Alltel, Western Wireless (CellularOne) and MidWest Wireless; Alltel has the largest coverage in the US. This fact was confirmed by an independent third party study in July 2005 that measured each carriers geographical owned and operated network. Also, Alltel is one of the only providers that offer "automatic minute back" for any dropped call on their network. That shows how committed they are to their network. But don't let me sway anyone's decision, I'm sure you can make up your own mind.
