In Germany it's called "Handy" but afaik it has nothing to do with the english word "handy"...
Afaik nobody knows how this has come up...

Could be, but it seems to lost the english meaning very fast...
The word "Handy" was used middle 80's the first for walkie-talkies, in the UK in the 70's and in the 40's "Handie-Talkie" was used in the USA.
But germans are dump... they even write signs for international events with "No handies please" - no native speaker does understand it

From google:
The noun "cellphone" has 1 sense in WordNet.
1. cellular telephone, cellular phone, cellphone, cell, mobile phone -- (a hand-held mobile radiotelephone for use in an area divided into small sections (cells), each with its own short-range transmitter/receiver)

I prefer the word 'handphone' or even 'fone'.

Cell from cellular because the network is divided in cells around each antenna. That how you can be traced wherever you are if your phone is on
In Tahiti it's called Vini, in New Caledonia it's called Mobilis, in France Portable or GSM...
