i currently have a 2 year contract with verizon and a phone i dont really like at all, and i have about a year left on my contract. im looking for a new phone, and since i cant trade my phone in for another year, i figure i should look on ebay for a phone and just have them switch over everything. i keep seeing phones that are "unlocked" to use with verizon, and i read about them and got a pretty good understanding of what they mean by unlocked, but there are things im not sure of. if the phone is locked to a certain provider, is it not illegal to change that? and how would someone use a "unlocked" phone without taking it into verizon to get it programmed right? i found a cool phone that i want, but im not sure about the unlocked process or anything. if someone could help me out, that would be great
heres a link to the phone i would like on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=64355&item=5705 533439&rd=1

I have the MPX200, very cool phone. It is "officially" only supported on ATT. I purchased an unlock code on the internet, downloaded some "flash" software, and now I have it working on T-mobile.
As long as your provider (Verizon) will support GSM telephones, you can probably get the phone to work just fine. You do not need any special software on the telephone to get the "PHONE" functions to work. The MPX200 also be easily configured to browse the internet. The only problem I have found is that certain features (e.g., tzones personalized web page) of T-mobile requires a specially installed ap on your phone to work - and that ap must be loaded by the provider. For those special aps, the provider will not help you nor provide the ap so you are SOL.
However, if all you want is a cool phone with cool features - the MPX200 will do you just fine.

Ignore last post, Verizon has a CDMA network. A GSM phone will not work. The phone in your ebay link is also a GSM phone and will not work for Verizon.

If you like the Motorola MPX-200 you should check out the SAMSUNG i600
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=64355&item=5724 793364
It pretty much does everything the MPX-200 does but you will find (in general, it may vary by area) that you will have better reception with the i600.

Is there any possible way to get a gsm phone to work on sprint? Even if you dont want the phone to use GSM. I have a Nokia 3120, and I wanna use it with my sprint service, but i cant figure out a way to do it. The sprint number to activate is 11 characters. My nokia has like 13-15 characters. Please help me and tell me whether it is possible or not.
