I have a new Motorola V600 with Cingular in northern California (GSM). I'm trying to use it as a wireless modem for my laptop by dialing in to my regular ISP. I know this will be slow but I don't want to subscribe to Cingulars GPRS, which is pay-per-KB.
I've spent several hours at the computer trying to Google my way out of all the problems without success, and have read everything I can find on these forums.
For starters, the Bluetooth connection to the computer works fine, no problems at all. The computer sees the "Dial Up Networking Gateway on Cellphone" service published by the phone.
When trying to dial my ISP (via the network connection dialog on the computer) it induces the phone to dial the number, but as soon as it connects, the phone plays a little three-tone "up-down-up" tune and hangs up the line, no error message. The computer complains "Error 678 [generic unhelpful blah blah]" and offers to redial.
I've tried every trick I can find, including trying to get on to Cingular's CSD and GPRS networks as described by Cingular themselves (http://alliance.cingularinteractive.com/products/pdf/DeviceSoftwareSe ttings.pdf) to no effect, which is unsurprising since I don't subscribe to GPRS.
Has anyone succeed in using a V600 this way? Has anyone succeeded in using any phone with Cingular this way? Many thanks for any advice.

Yes.
I have Moto V600, Cingular MEdia Works($19.99), and the Belkin Bluetooth USB Adapter F8T001 ver. 2(100m) for WinXP desktop pc.
I can dial to the regular ISP with local phone number and the GPRS of Cingular. The only software needed is the CD included in the Belkin adapter box.
For GPRS of Cingular,
User name: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1
Dial: *99#
Hope this helps.

when i read al the stuff on using the v600 as a modem, everybody says to use the bluetooth approach. let me play devils advocate here: say i wanted to use a usb cable to connect phone and laptop. will the v600 allow for manual changing of gprs/csd settings. can i then access using the cable and cingular csd settings ?
if it is decided you can change gprs and csd on v600, somebody out there explain how to get to menu ?

I've just been down this road. I'm now able to use the phone to dial into my local ISP via USB off my desktop or Bluetooth off my IPAQ 4155. To do USB you need software that can create a USB Modem. You can either download Mobile Tools from Motorola or get the Data Connectivity kit from Cingular. I also had the DataPilot kit from Best Buy and it also has the cable. Bluetooth from the IPAQ is pretty strait forward and does not require the Data Connectivity kit for PocketPC even though they tell you it does. In fact it conflicted with my bluetooth on the IPAQ. The biggest trick is getting the required Data Service turned on from Cingular! It took 5 seperate phone calls to make it happen correctly. Emphasize to them that you want to dial into your local ISP using your phone as a modem. They'll sign you up for the pay as you go plan but then need to tack on the GSM Data option for 3.99 an month. If only dialing into your ISP it just uses your voice plan minutes. Each time you call make sure they have the necessary codes entered and have you registered for the service. Both have to happen. Trust me I found out the hard way.

I called Cingular Customer Care and they told me that I needed a code on my account to access the CSD (how your phone communicates with your ISP) and it's called Data Connect ISP. Tell them exactly what you want to do so they know what you're talking about.

I just got off the phone with Cingular, their data division, and the guy flat told me that the network would support it but they do not ALLOW it. In other words, I can not use my phone as a modem on their network, period. This really screws me, any suggestions?

Hello! Okay, maybe I need detailed instructions. From what I've been reading this should be possible.
I have a Moto V400 and an HP Jornada 568. I just bought a cable that attaches the two together in the hopes of using the V400 as a modem. I upgraded my Cingular service to include Media Net unlimited. This allows me to contact the web via my phone.
I want to use my phone to connect to the net on my Jornada. I've tried some of these settings that I've found posted here and nothing is working. Could be lack of patience.
So. Would someone kindly tell me if I in fact have the capability of doing this on my Jornada through my Media Net enabled phone? And if so what exactly are the settings on the phone vs the settings on the Jornada? Pictures of details would be most welcomed!
Thanks much!!
