Hey all,
first ever post in here. Done a bit of researching in here and across the internet and would like some help. Using PC Suite to transfer midis across to my phone, some work but most dont. Thought it was to do with the channels or something, but a few that are fine (as in all 16 and under ) dont work. So what actually causes this.
And also, on some other phones, it is only supported with four channels. What does this mean, because most of the midis I find are a lot bigger than four. can you alter these to be under four, or under 16 in my personal case?
So what causes the file to be unable to open? There has to be some reason, and of course, a solution.
Thanks guys and girls.

You've got to differ:
The phones can play 4, 16, 24,... channels at once, it has nothing to do how much channels a midi has.
You can use a midi with 30 channels on a phone which only supports 4... as long as the midi doesn't uses more than 4 at once...
When a phone can't play, it could be a problem of the "synthesizer" within the phone, he might can't use the instrument within the midi.

Thanks.
So you're saying that the number of instruments used has little to do with whether it will work or not, as it can play up to four at once? It is usually because the synthesizer on the phone does not have a certain instrument loaded into it.
Ok, so if I wanted to tailor make polyphonics for specific phones (my 3200 has 16 and my friend's phone only has four), how would I go about this? if PC Suite can do it, then are there any tutorials or something that will teach me?
Thanks

Also important is file size. Inspite of every thing else being proper, if file size is too large, u can get that error.

PC Suite offers "Nokia Sound Converter", but it's tricky to do. Maybe you can find a tutorial via Google.
Sound Converter also shows which instruments in the midi can't be played. Sometimes they are the essential one

Hello from rainy Hong Kong. This is my first post on this forum.
I have just purchased a datacable and am using Nokia PC Suite with my 3200. I too am encountering this annoying "Unable to open file" problem when attempting to play transferred Midi files on my phone.
With much searching, I am still unable to find a solution to this problem. Has anyone had any luck?

Got it!
Seems to be one or two instruments per file. Often percussion or ensemble. Guitar and piano usually OK.
?Bass occasionally fails if set on channel one (seemed to happen once).
Therefore: start with just the guitars on channel one, others outside the phone range. Download to phone. If plays OK, add an instrument at a time, until you have as many as will play without the file failing.
Cheers
