This Q&A is a list of common problems.
Read it carefully and before posting, maybe the answer to your question is here
But first of all: Read the manual
Many questions are answered in there.
This Q&A refers only to actual available phones.
I tried to write this Q&A as easy as possible and to answer the most common and most interessting Questions. If one answer gives you another question first read the manual for a solution.
If you don't have the manual, download it at www.Nokia.com. Size: 2-6 MB as PDF
This online manuals have on big advantage: you can search within them. THX to Acrobat Reader and the little search-option.
Also these manuals are up-to-date. So if a feature is added with a new firmware it will be explained in the newest manual.
This Q&A is staged as follows:
- General questions
- General Nokia questions
- General Series 40 questions
- General Series 60 questions
- Phone specific questions
- PC Suite questions
Q: Where can I download ****** for free?
A: Not here! And you won't get any links here (besides of official links were you can buy the app/game)
Q: I've found a website where they offer the newest phone for only 20/40 //$ - isn't that awesome? I wanna share the site with you guys!
A: Nope, it isn't awesome. These websites are rip-offs! The more people want a phone and sign up, the lesser people will get one and the ones who make the website make alot profit. Don't even think about to post a link to them and try to catch some referels
Q: Could someone tell me secret codes for my Nokia phones?
A: There are no secret codes, only the old known ones:
Check the IMEI
*#06#
Show software version
*#0000#
Enhanced Full Rate Codec (EFR) activation (not S60/S80/S90)
*#3370#
Enhanced Full Rate Codec (EFR) deactivation (not S60/S80/S90)
*#3370*
EFR will give you much better sound quality when you enable it. The new Enhanced Full Rate CODEC adopted by GSM uses the ASELP (AlgebraicCode Excitation Linear Prediction) compression technology. This technology allows for much great voice quality in the same number of bits as the older Full Rate CODEC. The older technology was called LPC-RPE (Linear Prediction Coding with Regular Pulse Excitation). Both operate at 13 kilobits.(but you take up more space on the network, so they can charge you more) - Talk-time is reduced with about 5%
Half Rate
EFR Half will give you bad sound quality, which gives the service provider the opportunity to have more calls on the network, and you might get a lower charge from them. - Will give you 30% longer talk-time.
Sim clock stop. Only works for 3 minutes. (not S60/S80/S90)
*#746025625#
Secret menu (not S60/S80/S90)
*#92702689#
1) Shows the serial number.
2) Shows when the phone was made mm/yy
3) Shows when the the phone was purchased mm/yy
4) Shows how many times the phone has been repaired.
5) Makes you capable of transferring user data if you have the gear for it
6) Shows how many hours the phone has been on
Q: SD (Secure Digital) Cards are much cheaper than MMC cards, can I use them instead?
A: No, only MMCs are supports.
Q: What is the max. size of MMCs that can be used?
A: 512 MB should work for sure, 1GB maybe. But: It is not the size that matters. Some cards just won't work. Which can't be said. If you buy a card and it won't work: give it back!
Q: Where do I get the setting for MMS, WAP/GPRS, Internet and email?
A: The easiest way is Over-The-Air (OTA). Go to http://nokia.com/nokia/0,8764,96,00.html (or the specific Nokia website of your country!). Choose you phone from the list. There you will find a link for your settings, follow the instructions. Nokia will be send to you OTA as SMS. You only have save the settings and maybe have to activate them. This service is free!
If your provider isn't listed, he might not support the phone at the moment (or its features like WAP 2.0 or else). Try the website of your provider. If there are no settings, the phone really isn't supported. Sometime the hotline of the provider can help, but it's quite a shot in the dark.
Q: Does this phone has this or that feature?
A: Before you ask here, look at the official Nokia site of the phone. Most questions are answered there (especially in the FAQ).
Q: How can I set an animated GIF as wallpaper so it will be animated?
A: You can't. If you set an animated GIF as wallpaper, it will only show the first frame.
Q: I've installed a game and it is not fullscreen. Can it be fixed?
A: No, the games are especially programed for Series 30 phones. But in most cases the game also exists for Series 40
Q: I want install a sis-file, how it's done?
A: You can't. sis-files are especially for phones with Symbian OS.
Q: Can Series 40 Games be played on Series 60 phones?
A: Yes, but they won't be in fullscreen. The game will remain in their original programed size.
Q: I've bought a cable for my phone but it won't work. Why?
A: There are no data-cables. These cables are only for service needs and are not capable to transfer data to your phone. The 7610 is the first Symbian of Nokia which can use a cable (besides of the Communicator - but they are a different story )
Q: Where are my messages saved?
A: If your phone saves them within the phones memory they are in c:\system\mail. If they are saved on the MMC (not on all S60 phones possible) they are in e:\system\mail
Q: I've formatted my MMC with a card reader, now I can't access the card with my phone. What now?
A: You've formatted it with the wrong file system. If you want to reformat it with the card reader, choose FAT16 as files system, not FAT32! Or reformat the MMC with your phone, this way all standard folders will be created too.
Q: How can I copy & paste text?
A: Press and hold down the pencil key. Now you can mark the text by using the direction key. To copy, just press "copy". To insert the text press and hold down the pencil key and press "paste"
Q: Where to put my ringtones?
A: Ringtones should be stored in the "Sounds" folder on your MMC or within the phones memory. You can, if you want, sort them into the two subfolders "Simple" and "Digital".
Q: How do I install an app/ a game?
A: There are many ways. PC Suite bounds sis-files to its installer. You should be able to install them easily by double clicking on the sis-file (a connection should be made already!). Or you can send it over to the phone (IrDA or Bluetooth) and open it and it will install automatically. Or you can upload it with a card reader to the MMC and install it from there by open the file. For this method you need FExplorer or SeleQ to gain full access to the MMC.
The rest will be prompted and is easy to understand.
Q: Which Symbian OS version does my phone use?
A: 3600/3620/3650/3660/7650/N-Gage/N-Gage QD are using v6.1
3230/6260/6600/6620/6670/7610 are using v7.0s
6630/6680/6681/6682 are using 8.0
N70/N90 are using 8.1
3250/E60/E61/E70/N71/N80/N91/N92 are using v9.1
Q: How can I upgrade my Symbian OS to a newer version?
A: You can't.
Q: How do I format my phone?
A: - Normal Reset (*#7780#) : Restores ini files from rom but preserves user data (photos, 3rd party apps etc)
- Deep Reset (*#7370#) : This reformats completely the C: drive. All applications and files stored on this drive will be lost and clean default files will be rewritten.
In both case, the phone will ask you a confirmation and you will have to enter a security code (12345 by default).
Files and applications stored on E: drive are not be affected by these sequences.
For Symbian OS 7 and higher there is a third method:
Turn phone off, press and hold the green (talk) key on the left + number 3 on the keypad + the * key and then turn the phone back on.
The phone will start the formatting process without confirmation!
Files and applications stored on E: drive are not be affected by this.
Q: How do I get the MAC adress of the bluetooth device of my phone?
A: *#2820#
Q: How do I get the MAC adress of the WLAN device of my phone?
A: *#62203526#
Q: My phone reacts quite slow, how can I speed it up?
A: You can speed up the phone by setting the time of the "Recent calls register" to one day (30 days by default). It depends on you how important the "Recent calls register" is for you.
Q: When I want to upload something on the MMC I get a "The operation could not be completed" error. How to fix this?
A: Rename the MMC (can be done in the Gallery) and reboot your phone.
Q: Can I use mp3s as ringtones?
A: Yes!
Q: I've got a big movie on my phone and want to fastforward (rewind). How can I do this?
A: You can't.
Q: I've uploaded mp3s to my MMC and arranged them in folders. The phone won't find any of them. Can this be fixed?
A: mp3s have to be in the root of the MMC. Or you define the location of the mp3s before uploading via playlist, so when the phone accesses the playlist, it knows the mp3s are in this specific folder.
Nokia 6600: Q: I had to format my MMC and the full version of Opera is gone. How do I get it back?
A: Please take a look here: http://www.opera.com/support/search/supsearch.dml?index=746&session=
Opera offers Nokia 6600 owner to download the trial opf the newest version and get the registration code for free
Q: Where can I buy it?
A: The 7700 isn't officially released and it seems it will never be released to public. But some few float, you might have luck some day and find one on Ebay or else.
Q: PC Suite won't find my phone via IrDA, what now?
A: First check the hardware manager if the IrDA device is actually installed. If it is installed, try reducing the speed on some point it should work. Also check the Nokia Connection Manager if using IrDA is activated.

This might sound cliched, but nice stuff Bjoern
Anyway, if I am not mistaken, the latest S40 phones like the 6230 can accept JAVA apps upto 128kb (you have mentioned the max size as 64kb). Correct me if I am wrong.

I'm compiling a 6600/7610 FAQ list. I'll post it soon.
Btw, is there any way to rename the items in the main menu in a 6600/7610?
