I wouldn't particulary advise trying to fraud your service provider. They know what phone you were last using with your SIM card via the imei number.
If you do happen to get away with something like that then it is pure luck of the draw, but some company's will come after you for obtaining goods by deception.
Basically it's not a good idea!!

Everytime you make a call with a cell phone the IMEI number is transmitted. They log all these and may even put your IMEI on a blacklist to where it won't work at all.
Every cell phone transmission is recorded and logged in a national system with SIM number, IMEI number, and GPS location.

word, if you pull it off, and get a new cell, dont even think about using your old one, get right of it, sell it, trash it, but no use

It's not T-mobile that is going to send you the phone it's Assurion the insurance provider. There are a few steps to go through and they WILL verify the use of the phone and what brand, make, etc. I think your friend is making it up.
