I have a nokia 6820 that I'm using with tmobile now, but for some reason the phone won't use the built in aim application to connection to aim. It also won't use the one thats linked to on the tmobile wap page.
I really got this phone because I wanted to use the text messaging abilities of it, and right now I feel like I'm being cut short. Does anyone know how to get aim to work. T-Zones *does* work jic you're wondering.

Just a wild guess, but I think AIM doesn't needs a "normal" GPRS connection but a internet GPRS connection which is also needed for emails.

Thanks for starting this useful post, Zero-S. I was thinking of doing the same thing as nomayo (getting another provider's 6820 for use tmobile) and am glad this post is here to help. Although I don't any experience with getting AIM (or GPRS?) to work, maybe this might help to explain why it doesn't...
I was told by a Tmobile representative that tmobile's AIM service (in the US at least) is somehow SMS based... This would make sense, since Tmobile charges the same rate for SMS text messages as they do for AIM messages through the phone's included messenger. I suspect that this SMS based AOL Instant Messenger is only included on tmobile phones, and only where tmobile uses their SMS based AOL.
And so, the AOL messsenger on my motorola a630 sold by tmobile, or on any other model sold by tmobile with integrated AIM (such as a nokia 6800) should work just fine with Tmobile's implementation of AIM.
Currently, Tmobile doesnt offer the 6820 in the US- so I would guess that your AIM is trying to connect over GPRS (how another provider would usually implement AIM)... GRPS just isn't how Tmobile does AIM in the US at least (from what I understand).
From what I've heard, MSN or Yahoo messages (which are not charged as messages by Tmobile) do work through GPRS on Tmobile in the US, so I would guess that AIM might work the same way. Nomayo, I dont know if there would be a way to get GPRS to work on the 6820 from another provider. Hopefully if anyone's had luck with this, please share.
But back to the AIM- I wonder if Tmobile's AIM in europe is SMS based? Tmobile does offer the 6820 in europe, and so it would be nice to see how AIM is configured on that variety of 6820. Has anyone had luck with using a european tmobile 6820 in the US?

I talked to T-mobile, Nokia, and AOL. The consensus is as follows: (You can find more information on this via the website: http://www.mymobile.aol.com for general aim support).
Specifcially, all the phones that T-mobile supports for the AIM software is on http://mymobile.aol.com/portal/carriers/tmobile.jsp
They do not support Nokia 6820 right now. They are only up to Nokia 6800 (if you check out what phones you can buy from their website, its on there). I personally want a Nokia 6820i, but that isn't available in the US right now.
In regards to unlocked phones, I have an unlocked phone from the AT&T/Cingular *gag* network. Because of this, we cannot use the AIM software that has been setup in our phones on the tmobile network.
In conclusion: try to get t-mobile to upgrade their capability to support our phone. That is the only hope for Nokia 6820 owners.
