I think I found your problem!
You may have downloaded the wrong ma3 software.
for the nec phone.
ATSMA3S
here you will find the correct "ma3" for smaf format.

I have an e715 and the mmf I make doesn't play on my phone. I think I need to convert it to 16chord, but don't know how...

first all the steps using psm player
convert the mmf to midi
then convert the midi to mmf but u choos 16smaf then u got the mmf of 16chord
