Is it possible to update the firmware by your self, if you have the flash file and a data cable?
Or do you need Nokias expensive "boxes" (or whatever you guys prefer to call them)..?

You can do it with special cables (about 40 britisch pound)... but it's not recommendable... the risk of crapping your phone is much higher than with the boxes.
Also you will lost warranty when you do it yourself. Better let the Nokia-People in the shops do it. And it's for free during warranty.

It's usually free if the upgrade is done by Nokia Care Centre and your phone is still under warranty. (I guess there is a possiblility that some other stores may charge you a fee for the service).
