I'm afraid I didn't get it solved, I never got a reply from Motorola! I kinda just gave up and accepted it, although it does still bug me to death.
If you (eventually) find anything out about it, would you let me know please? You might have a bit more success or patience than me!
Cheers!

In my old Nokia, it was easy, I just used to put people into different caller groups and assign the ringtone. However, for love nor money can I see in the inadequate owners manual how to do this on the V600. I even went into each individual phonebook entry to assign a ringtone which APPEARED to work, however, it now uses that ringtone both for calls AND text messages.
It must be dizzy me that's doing something wrong, can you help at all...?
Oooh, and can you only assign different lights to the various volumes of ringtones (ie: vibrate/loud/soft etc) or can you assign them to people?
Thanks

OK. here are some information. hope this helps.
it seems that you manage to set ringer id to contacts. i am not sure if you know this. you can also set ringer id to caller group. in v600 the caller groups are called categories. you can also assign different light to different categories. unfortunately you can't set different light to contacts directly. you cannot set lights to the various volumes of ringtones (ie: vibrate/loud/soft etc).
now, about the "it now uses that ringtone both for calls AND text messages.". THIS CAN"T BE HELPED. I contacted motorola and that is what they told me. (shucks!!!!!!). So the same ringtone WILL be used for call and messages. This is irritating.
Here are some extra tips and warning about categories in the phone book:
1. you can add extra categories
2. to asign light to one person, you cannot do that directly through the contact but you can do it by assigning the contact to a category and then tie the category to a light.
3. becareful when you press to view a certain category. it will only show you the members in the category. if you accidentally select a category that has no members and the you exited the phone book, the next time you go into the phone book and discover that ALL you contacts are MISSING, dun panic, its there, its just hidden. in the phone book, press menu > categories >All. you should be able to see all your phone book entries appear again.
