Hi All,
Do we need to unlock Motorola V600 GSM (quad-band) to use it in India (900/1800 bands)?
If yes, how do I do it? Is there a motorola customer service I have to call?
Thanks,
Gaurav

Unless your phone has had its "sim unlocked" you will not be able to use a different sim card in it. this could be done by your provider with a call telling them you need the code to unlck the phone.
if you want to use your regular sim card with your phone number check to see if your provider has a roaming agreement in India

Thanks for your quick response.
I will call my provider ATnT tomorrow to check it out. ATnT does have International roaming that should work in India but that is very expensive ($0.99 per min), so I would like to buy a local SIM card in India and use it.

the point of "unlocking" you phone is so you can use it with other carriers eg: tmobile, AT&T, cingular ect. if you both have At&T sims their is no point you on the same network just diffrent accounts. If you want to go out side of the county the best thing to do is have an unlocked phone and by the sim out in the area ur going to be in. --
i dont know if you phone company is going to give you the unlock code. you may have to call the cell phone maker or even better look on this forum.

The last posting is correct. You must unlock if you care to use your GSM phone with ANY carrier or for ANYWHERE in the world. Using the same carrier to test is silly as of course the sim card will work, but if you tried it on another carrier you would find it DOES NOT work unless you unlock your phone.
I doubt you will get the code to unlock from the manufacturer as they have a vested interest in the provider that they sell the phone. Also the carrier for certain will NOT give the code for the same reasons.
However, you can have your GSM phone unlocked by many Cell phone shops, online companies for just a few dollars. One cell phone company, Travelmania, will unlock any GSM phone for 15.00 fee if you have one near your residence. THere are many more outfits that can do the same.
just go to google and insert " unlocked GSM " into the search field and you can find people that can unlock your phone.

They unlock phones in Local cell phone shops for less than Rs. 100. It will void your warranty though.
T-mobile has extensive coverage agreements in India, it is a bit expensive at $2 per minute. Also you need to activate this coverage from US. you have to fill up a form and then they authorize you.

What do I need to do before I travel abroad with my phone?
To use your phone while traveling abroad, call Customer Care (611 from your PCS phone or 1-800-937-8997) and request that the international roaming feature be added to your account. You will also need to make sure that you own or rent a multi-band world phone.
