hi i have a t637 fone which is totally useless on gsm. my friends t62u though catches signals everywhere. i was thinking i will buy a nokia 6340i and use my sim on it. the sim i have now is a gsm sim (i am not sure but i guess thats what i have). can i use the same sim on a nokia 6340i gait and expect to jump between tdma and gsm as and when the signal quality drops?
else what changes do i need to make to my plan?
pls help

From what I've seen, unfortunatley you may need a new sim card. The serial numbers burned on your chip using strictly GSM are lacking the ESN needed for the chip to work on a tdma network. a chip in a gait phone has both the esn needed for the original network as well as the imei needed for the gsm network. This is why the you can use a gait chip in a gsm, phone but not vice-versa. Almost as if it has too much information instead of lacking it. The only way around the problem is to get the chip burned with the 6340's esn without replacing it.
Hope some of that helped, I'm fairly new at this. I'm sure if I'm wrong someone will jump in with more info.

Combo21 is correct. Short answer is, Yes you will have to get a new SIM if you change to GAIT. It will also be necessary for you to change to a GAIT Rate Plan, which are not as "friendly" as GSM since the company is trying to move all customers to GSM.
I would try to check first that your signal issue isn't due to a bum phone. Do other people with GSM phones have same problem where you do? Also, if you've had your T637 for less than 15 days, you can return & exchange it for diff model.

Actully the above two are wrong.... you can use the SIM from a GSM phone to a GAIT phone (ive done it many times myself
Now you do need to do a few things in order for it to work.... you do have to call cingular... and they have to change your account to a GAIT account. Dont put you SIM into the gait phone, untill they have migrated your account to a GAIT account... its really easy and should not be a problem.
Also as previous stated, you will need to select a GAIT plan.. (if you want to see these you can see them onlin)

thanks a lot for ur replies. i understand that i have to call cingular get a gait plan, buy a new gait fone and then trfr my sim to it to work on tdma/gsm. yes gait is much better than gsm. i travel extensively and everywhere my friends fone works better than the gsm. one example. i think the tdma part uses the 800mhz part of the spec which penetrates buildings better.so when i am in walmart my gms works till say aisle 5 and my friends works throughout the building coz i think it switches to the ATT tdma network so it does work better but the t68u is a uselss fone and so is the nokia 6340 or something - the only 2 fones on GAIT. and my sony ericsson t637 is the WORST fone ever. i wudd generally stay away frm any sony fone henceforth. stick with nokia i guess. when i was with sprint though i never had any problems unnecessary change to cingular with lots of headache!!!!!!!!!!!
