Are you sure the pictures you're uploading to the phone are the correct dimensions (176 x 220 pixels)? If they're wrong they'll end up looking squished or otherwise distorted as the phone attempts to resize the picture to the phone's unusual screen dimensions.
Here's a good place to find a lot of wallpapers in the correct size:

Also, if you want to customize you own wallpaper and you are not familiar on how to resize the picture this is a great tool to use. You may need to register with this website. Of course there is no fee.

Wow! Great tool. I'd registered with Zedge but did not see that upload program. Saves me from having to mess with Photoshop and provides an instant wap site to download them. Thanks!

hey actually one more quick question i dunno if you guys know how to do this but is there a way to take a piece of a song (that is wav or mp3file) and somehow convert it to a midi and use it as a ringtone. but i actually wants it to be the REAL song...not a polyphonic, do you know wut i mean?

You may want to try mp3 cutter. It lets you edit wav or mp3 file.

duceduc: After cropping images for wallpaper on Zedge, is there a way to save them as .jpgs on my hard drive? I've tried to right-click save the resulting images, but they're apparently .bmp files. Once my USB cable arrives this week I'll still want to use that tool but won't want to incur the data charges of downloading them via WAP. Or does the Mobile Phone Tools suite have a similar cropping utility?
On a slightly different tack, is there an emulator or something that allows you to view WAP sites on your computer?
