They do have to provide the service, but they don't have to spend a lot of effort on quality. Unless you are in a rural area, the chances of analog being better than digital are slim. The operators (Verizon, Cingular, etc.) would love to dump analog TODAY, but the FCC won't let them do it. So, they do the next best thing - they pretty much ignore it as far as quality is concerned.

That's not true for rural areas, of course, where analog may be the only game in town.

For use in your home, look into signal boosters.

Thank you to AldPixto and engineer for your insights!

I realize that my problem is my all-digital phone which is not able to find me inside buildings.

A signal booster may be a good idea, but I have only days to exchange my current phone. So I decided to do just that and get a tri mode LC VX 4300, which, coincidentally, was $70 cheaper!

It is true, tri mode is really the most reliable way to go if you are not always in a major city or suburban area with good tower coverage. I have to drive through some of the national forests on regular occasion and the only signal available is analog. Even though the sales staff for my provider keeps telling me digital is all you need I don't see making a change until I just have to, even though it may take the battery charge down faster. I just wish there was more of a selection in teh newer models.
