hi.. i have service with cingular on the gait family plan. i have the sony ericson t62u phone and i just bought a used nokia 6340i because i hate the sony. both of those phones work on the gait network and on the plan that i am on.. when i get the nokia phone, can i just switch the sim card to make the nokia phone work? are there any special instructions or tips i should know about? thank you!

Actually, its not as easy as merely swapping the sim cards. GSM uses the SIM card to authenticate you to a network; TDMA and AMPS (and CDMA for that matter) use an ESN unique to the device. It should be a fairly easy swap, but you'll need to call customer service to get them to update the equipment you're using, and there may be a couple steps you have to enter into the phone for it to send the pairing of your phone number (instead of the previous owner's) and ESN.

the last time I programmed a TDMA phone was over the phone with AT&T (they told me what to enter). I have to think they'd be able to do it for you via 611 or in a store.

GAIT phones don't need to be programmed - you will need to call into customer service to give them the ESN and IMEI. You can just switch the SIM yourself.
