This thread is three years old, but I wanted to post a reply so that others with my problem would have an easy time finding the answer.
As promised, turning the phone off, touching the bottom plug electrodes lightly (with a small pair of scissors, in my case), turning it back on. Voila! the phantom car kit disappeared.
No need to bore you with the details of my important life and why my phone is necessary. just want to say to the world of Google searchers:
Verizon LG Phone Stuck on "Car Kit"
BTW: I did not get my phone wet, but I was using it while gardening this afternoon, maybe small bits of stray dirt also cause this condition.
Thanks to the anonymous stranger who shared this tidbit in 2006.

First, I cleaned out the crud in the bottom connector, then, I poked around at the pins on the right hand side with a paperclip. Then, I plugged and unplugged the charger from the phone 3 or 4 times. Then, I powered the phone off. When I turned it back on, the welcoming Verizon sound greeted me. Huzzah! Thanks, BJ! You rule!

BJ - thank you for your solution. It worked great. i used a thin pocket knife on the right side of the charging port. i could hold it down on the right side and car kit would turn off - but i had to keep the knife pressing against it. i shorted it out a few times and it would temporarily work - finally i kind of bent the pin back which seemed to be deactivating the car kit. it worked like a champ. Thanks for thinking outside the box. Two questions: (1) how in the world did you figure this out to begin with? (2) why does LG have a default setting which makes the phone inoperable after getting wet? they should be more honest with their users.
