First I have t-mobile...
Second look to see if you have the following somewhere in your menu:
Dialing Services>Voice Dial
I have heard that some companies don't have this option.
All voice dial numbers must be stored on the phone and not the sim.
Record your name for that address.
Then go and create a short cut to the left soft key to voice dial.
To use it you just press the short cut and say the name. It will locate the number in the address book and a few seconds later it will dial.
It works without the head set.
I hope this helps...

I just got off the phone with motorola and figured out how to use voice dialing services. The manual does not have the appropriate information included to set it up. Follow these steps for the Motorola v180 and you will be voice dialing in no time.
Setting up voice dial on a Motorola V180.
1. Go to Menu -> Settings -> Tools -> Dialing Services -> Voice Dial
2. Push and hold the Menu key for a second or two until you see “Assign shortcut for voice dial”
3. Select “Yes”
4. Scroll down to the “Key” field and select “Change”
5. Select a shortcut key for voice dial. I.E. (#2 key) and select “Ok”
6. Select “Done”
7. You should see “Assigned shortcut Menu +2” if you used my example from step 5
8. To place a call using voice dial
a. Use the shortcut key (Menu + 2)
b. You will be prompted on the screen to say a name
c. Say the name of the person you are trying to call
d. The address book will come up on the display showing the person you are calling.
e. The call will then dial automatically and voila, you have made a call using voice dialing services.
----------------------------------------------------------------
I found the following information on the Motorola support website and it works except for the last step.
----------------------------------------------------------------
How do I use the Voice Dial feature on my phone?
You can record a voice name for a new or existing phonebook entry. A voice name lets you call the phonebook entry using voice dial.
Note: You cannot record a voice name for an entry stored on the SIM card.
Tip: Make your recording in a quiet location. Hold the phone about 4 inches (10 centimeters) from your mouth, and speak directly into the phone in a normal tone.
Open the phonebook by pressing Menu then select Phonebook.
Press the directional keys to scroll to the entry.
Press VIEW to view entry details.
Press EDIT to edit the entry.
Press the directional keys to scroll to Voice Name.
Press RECORD to begin recording.
Press RECORD again and say the entry’s name (within 2 seconds) to record the voice name.
When prompted, press RECORD and repeat the name.
Press DONE to store the voice name.
Skip the next step and proceed to step #8 from above.
To dial a voice entry Press and hold Send or the voice key if available on your phone, then say the name when prompted.

Go to Menu -> Settings -> Tools -> Dialing Services -> Voice Dial
I have AT&T Wireless and my V180 only lists "Fixed Dial" under Dialing Services. There's no listing of Voice Dial.
I've heard a couple of explanations:
1) You have to have a headset plugged in that has an "answer" and "end" button.
2) This feature is available on Cingular but not AT&T.
Does anybody know the truth. If voice dialing can be activated on this phone, then how?

That is rather odd. I thought all v180's had the same menu selections. I just double checked mine to be sure and it has 3 selections under the "Dialing Services" menu. They are "Fixed Dial", "Service Dial" and "Voice Dial".

vheflin, that is odd. I was just at a different AT&T store (now Cingular) tonight than I was earlier today and a guy there said that the original intent was to make voice dialing available on the V180, but Motorola changed its mind and didn't put in the hardware. Obviously your phone says different; however, you are on Cingular. A friend of mine was told that the firmware for Cingular is different than AT&T and that AT&T chose not to have voice dialing, but you would think that voice dialing is phone dependent not service dependent. I can't seem to get a straight story. Earlier today at a different AT&T store, the girl called Motorola and the person said that you have to have a headphone installed with answer and end, but the guy at the second store said this wasn't true. There is an option under headphones that allows voice dialing.
Vheflin, do you have headphones attached? How long have you had your phone? I know this isn't just my phone, because others only show fixed dialing as an option. So Vhelfin, can you voice dial successfully?
Anybody have a V180 on AT&T out there?

I found some disgruntled AT&T users that have the same problem as I have on http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/p_forum.php?fm=m&ff=466&fi=109919
One says that Motorola claims it is a bug, but they haven't fixed it.

I have the same problem and cannot voice dial. I cannot figure out the correct keystroke sequence to allow one to "voice dial". Has anyone solved this riddle on the V180?

bachdog,
To answer your questions in order from above, I do not have headphones attached. I purchased the phone from a cingular store on December 1, 2004. Yes, I can sucessfully voice dial. Ironic as it may sound, it is easier to speed dial as you only have to push one button as opposed to pushing the shortcut keys (menu + 2) described in my initial post. Like I said above I spoke with someone from Motorola to help me set this up. Previously I called Cingular and none of the reps I spoke with were able to help me as the information needed to sucessfully set up voice dial in NOT in the manual.

I was told by motorola that it was an erro on their part and the phones were shipped without the full software. It needs to be flashed which they do not have a flash for yet.
I patiently await it so I can use voice dial. I loved that feature on my old v60i.
