After unsuccessful attempts with rickyd's and blade's instructions, I tried something else which did work.
I inserted the plug-in for the lighter charger on the contacts on the bottom of the phone (under the rubber seal). Even though it wasn't plugged into a lighter, the car kit indicator started flashing. After putting the plug in and out a couple of times, the car kit indicator went away and the phone started functioning as new.
What ticks me off though, is that these fixes are pretty simple. Yet when you bring the phone to Verizon, the first thing they do is look for an indication of moisture and then disclaim complete responsibility and do nothing to help, other than tell you your phone is shot, the warranty is void, and you need to buy a new phone at full price.

Thanks to blade760, I tried those instructions but they didn't work for me. However, I modified them a little bit and then they worked.
#1) press soft key for menu
#2) then press 0
#3) you'll have a service code prompt, type 000000
#4) then type 2 (it should be field tests)
#5) then type 4 (clear errors)
#6) choose yes for clear errors
#7) press clear once
#8) type 1 (Service Prg)
#9) choose ok soft button (in the middle) all the way through until the end. Then the phone will reset.
About half way through the tests, my phone started making noise (keypad beeps).
Thanks!!

Hi,
I have the same problem with the "- car kit-" message appearing and the ringer is off.
I tried both the solutions, given by blade to go into settings and also the headset solution. both did not do the trick for me.
i tried removing the battery, restarting the phone, cleaning the charging port etc.. nothing seems to work.
this is really frustrating. anyone has found any other solution? thanks

I had the same problem. My daughter likes to play with cell phones and she put my cell phone in her mouth and managed to get some of her salive inside the phone. My phone immediately went into -car mode-.
To fix it, I used the hair dryer and dried out that portion which had her saliva on it.
The -car mode- banner immediately went away.

Thanks for any and all help!

Try all of these. Ifthey don't work, there isn't much else in the way of a fix. I will say that if all a phone does is go into 'car kit' mode, that's better than the alternative to when most phones get wet. They don't work. Your best bet is to try this stuff now, as you have, then look to alternatives.
The phone got wet and will eventually have greater water-based damage (corrosion etc). If the phone carries the importance for you as your post implies. Call customer service for a possible early upgrade or at the very least take advantage of the equipment replacement policy (a cheap refurb bought about 20.00 with no contract).
The deal with car kit is..if your phone didn't get wet, you have every chance that the fixes here will work. If it got wet, 50/50 at best.

my husband did this, we found the instructions on this site.
it worked! turns out this is a common
problem with my phone and verizon likes to rip people off, instead of
fixing it for 25 bucks they tell u u need a new phone. He opened it
and cleaned it, we found this post online, thank God!
Here is the post below that helped me fix my phone. I dropped it in a sink Satruday night and it is fixed today!
-----------------------http://howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=636054
I have had this happen to both my vx7000 and vx6000 and each time I
was able to fix it. One was ruin by 2 year old daugther getting
slobber all over the end and causing it to corode and my vx7000 got
some liquid on it.
Here is what I did. I took both phones apart to the board. Actually,
took the board out. I then sprayed some universal cleaner/degreaser
(Blue Shower 2) used for cleaning electronics on that area. I used a
brissled brush to get clean up in the connections areas to remove any
corrosion. Then I took a hair dryer and thoroughly dried it out. Put
the phones back to together, dried it somemore, turned them on and
both worked just fine. It you try this, make sure you get all your
wires back in the right places on the board. It makes it easier to
clean when all you have is the board in your hand.
Actually, I have did this procedure 4 times with success all 4 times.
Verizon said I needed new phones that it couldn't be fix plus my
battery was shot. I guess that was about 7 months ago and haven't had
to replace anything.
