You guys are great. Last night I spilled champagne all over my phone and it starting shutting on and off profusely. I didn't know what went wrong with it. All of a sudden, it went into "Car kit" and I thought. I don't have a Car?

So first try I just shut off my phone, took the battery out. Worked temporarily but didn't work fully.

Next attempt I left it out for the night. Once again temporarily.

My 3rd attempt was I kept blowing into the charger area and it would revive itsself. Once again, worked for a little bit.

Then I googled and found this great site for the simpliest product ever to be used. TIN FOIL.

Tin Foil --> Tech Support. Thanks guys!

I have a VX8100, last Sunday it went into car kit mode, suprisingly though, it was my 26th birthday. Alright, so I'm not the best person with my phone, I've left it on the back of my tailgate as I drove away, then came back for it and barely drove over it with it open face down (no damage miraculously). I'm a busy college guy in chemical engineering so I'm supper busy. This last Sunday I was in the shower getting ready for church and my buddy calls me to wish me a happy birthday, so turning the water off and NOT applying my cheme knowledge, I answered my phone in the shower, which I've done for the past year that I've had this phone. I talked to him up till the point that I got to church (which is like a 20 minute drive). Anyways once I got there I put my phone in 'vibrate' mode like always. After the sermon I opened my phone to turn it back to 'ring', but when I opened it it read "car kit." Not thinking much of what exactly this was, I had an idea of what maybe why it read this and just figured that it would go off after some time. For example, about two months back, I kinda did the same stupid thing, I answered the phone in the shower, despite of knowning how humid it was. After about an hour, my screen display turning completely purple, so I couldn't see who was calling, except for the fact that I have it on 'announce' so it just tells me who is calling, but for me making a call was more like a guessing game. A week later my screen went out and wouldn't show anything. Half a week passed by and the screen started to work, but just with a purple screen. At the end of that week I noticed that if I smacked my phone, the screen picture would display for a split-second. About another week passed by and then my screen display started worked all the time. So I guess the point that I'm trying to make is that I figured if that could fix itself, then I would think the car kit mode would fix itself. Yesterday (March 5th) was the first day that I started looking online and found this forum. I've basically read through these 15 pages of forum to see what is available.

I've tryed everything from doing the soft key, zero, then all zeros for service code, cleared the errors under field search and followed the instructions, that didn't work. Once the phone came back on I tryed the other option in the service mode, which is doing the service prg and going through that. Phone restarted and still, 'car kit' showed. I then read someone else talking about a paper clip, I tryed that, cleaning the charging port, nope. Aluminum foil, nope, if anything I just kept on shorting it and it wouldn't come back on till I took out the battery and then put it back in. I've checked for water damage/signs, nothing. I read someone say to use rock salt (sodium chloride), a hair dryer, compressed air, but I doubt any of these would even work for me since I got started so late that any moisture would of dryed by now. I've even tryed the one idea of taking my car charger and plugging and unplugging it continuously into the phone while plugged into DC and while it was unplugged from the truck, still nothing. I've even tryed it with a headset plugged in and alternating this whole procedure, still nothing. Someone said that a text message might work, nope, except I'm going to see if I can have someone from Verizon text me to see if that works, as it did for someone else, I know how Verizon is about this, but I know two people who work there so I'm going to see if they can help me, maybe maybe not, but what do I have to lose. I do have phone insurance, which I'm so glad, but I don't want to have to use it yet. The one option that I've read that I've still yet to do is to take the phone apart, I need to get a small enough screw driver so I can do it.

You know what really grinds my gears, years ago I had a Motorola V60, that phone was AMAZING. Now if you thought that this phone had been through hell, that V60 makes this story seem like heaven. For instance, one night I was coming in from my car and it was just pouring out (If you couldn't tell I live near Seattle), I remember just falling asleep on the couch and waking up the next morning to realize I didn't have my phone on me. and you can probably guess it, I looked outside and there it was, in a muddy puddle, submerged about 3 inches under for over 12 hours. I took it out and turned it on, sure enough it came right on, only problem was that the speakers were full of water and silt. A few weeks later it was back to the good ol' phone that it always was. My only problem with that phone, as with ANY Motorola phone was that the phones after awhile would quite charging with the charger. I would have to wiggle the charger, lick it, or even plug and unplug for almost 5 minutes at times until it would start charging. The other problem that I would have is that my antenna would brake off and I would have to go and get another one, I did this about 6 to 8 times over the two years I had the phone.

So I guess basically what I am trying to say is that Motorola phones are awesome, but until they can fix their issue with the charging ports, I would never own another one, and as far as the LG phones, this 'car kit' BS is non-sense and I think that if they don't change this that someone who might be stranded in the wilderness or mountains forsay and their only hope is to make a phone call to be rescued, and lets just say too that they have slight phone service, would they be screwed if their phone got wet and said 'car kit', or would the 911 dispatch have a search team go out even without being able to communicate with the stranded victim?

Maybe I'm just thinking too much but I think that the car kit is a good idea for the company making a profit, but for the consumer it is just absurd, especially how sensitive this thing is. Anyways sorry to be so long, I guess I just had to vent. If anyone has any other suggestions other than I shouldn't be allowed to have a cell phone, I would be most honored if you could share them with me. If I am able to fix this problem I will most certainly share it with everyone. Thank you.

I too have received the car kit mode error message after a few drips of condensation dripped from my travel coffee mug down to the receptor for the car charger when charging in my car yesterday morning.

I have been able to get the phone out of car kit mode, and I am now able to receive and send text messages and calls. There is some corrosion on the bottom of the phone (near receptor for charging). I have tried the reseting of error messages, I have tried a paper clip. I am able to switch from high & vibe to manner mode and back and forth. Everything seems to function fine again.

However, I have a static noise that comes out of the speaker periodically (below the outside display on the front of your phone). This happens whether my phone is just sitting still with no interaction and while on a call. Any ideas as to how to get rid of this annoyance?

I'm very thankful for all the ideas on this site. and have read through all 15 pages as well. It has been very helpful!

same problem i had.

i tried plugging a headset in, taking that battery off, looking at every menu, yelling at it. . . i even took it to the tech support center at a verizon store. the only solution they could offer was signing up for another 2 years and getting a free promo phone. i also had insurance on the phone, but they didnt want to cover it because i said i didnt drop it. everyone was real helpful.

the problem was actually amazingly simple.
i dont know if anyone else has said this yet (too many replies for me to read), but. . .

if you dont think that moisture is the culprit, the first thing you should look at are the pins where you plug your charger in.

are any of them touching or bent out of shape?

if so you have a short. disconnect the battery and straighten the pins with a needle, or paperclip or something. now connect the battery and turn on your phone. back in business?
hope so, car kit mode sucks.

a combination of foil and time fixed it for me.

i accidently ran my vx8100 through the washer icon_sad.gif its a miracle it even survived. (i did end up having to buy a new battery) after trying the phone it gave me this "Car Kit" message , but the phone seemed otherwise in perfect working order. after learning that the "Car Kit" thing prevented me from making calls or hearing sounds from my phone (oddly enough i could still listen to music through the vcast music store, go figure) i took it to the verizon store and the lady basically said that im screwed and of course i hadnt purchased insurance. she said the phone would only get worse after time, and promptly told me that i needed to purchase a new phone at retail price.

luckly i found this forum and tried using the service codes, car charging tricks, paper clip in the charging port, all to no avail.
then i tryied the foil in the charging port and BAM! it worked! but only if i LEFT the foil in the port, as soon as i took it out it went back to car kit mode. i was still bummed, as i wasnt keen walking around school with foil stuck up my fones butt. so for the rest of the night i left the foil in, and then took it out to go to bed. that night i decieded to fully charge the new batter (after taking the foil out) overnight, and when i woke up, turned the phone on, it still said car kit. but then, right after removing the charger from the port, the car kit mode went away! to test this, i plugged the phone BACK in, and the car kit mode came back, then when i unplugged it from the port, it went away. i repeated this at least 10 times to confirm it. so currently ( i havent tried it today) when my fone is charging, the car kit mode is on, and when its not, the mode is gone, which i can live with since i only charge the fone at night.

so for all those still stuck in the car kit misery, keep messing with the foil, and the charger, and give it time, because its definatly something in the bottom charging port that its setting off the car kit mode (at least for the 8100's)

Theres no way i was going to read though all the post related the issue of car kit mode, maybe someones already given the correct anwser but just in case heres the problem, its not so much the water that causes this problem, water will do more damage than the simple car kit mode problem, the real issue is the dirt and corrosion .
The port connectors are dirty or you may even have a couple bent pins touching eachother, so check that first if they are touching try and seperate them if not take a small soft tooth brush and some rubbing alcohol and gently clean the pins, let dry befor powering up phone 5-10 minutes should be good.
You see from what i did read of this thread some of you figured it out without even knowing how, by plugging in your cord you unwittingly cleaned or seperated the pin's. Hope this proved to be timely and i didnt waist time answering a allready answered question.

Finally I got it fixed. I had the car kit problems as so many other have also. I, however didnt expose my phone to any moisture other than what was in the air. What the problem was with my phone is that my wall charger has to be at an angle in order to charge so when i was trying to get that angle i must have bent one of the prongs in the charging port. THis caused it to touch another prong causeing the short out. I read gakare's post on how to take phone apart and someone elses post on the prongs causeing shorting out if they touch. I then took the phone apart and used a magnifing glass to see which prong was bent (far right side) and i just bent it back and put the phone together and presto. I hope this may help someone else who has tried everything else to get rid of this annoying "car-kit" problem which is just a money makeing ploy from LG. Best of luck and i hope your day turns better just like mine has.

Mine is fixed. just took a bit of time to get the static/feedback noise coming from the speaker on the outside but seems to be functioning just fine now. Never did try the foil trick - just let it continue to work it's way out of the corrosion/moisture. I was able to stick a paperclip in there but it didn't seem to do much. All prongs were straight.

All good now!

Also, I followed the coding right away though and that helped get it out of car kit mode.
