To Remove “Car-kit” error: What worked for me as suggested by chemist joec27 is using Calcium Chloride (CaCL2) as a drying agent since it pulls moisture out of the air, and according to Verizon, this car-kit error is caused by exposure to moisture. For the average person, you can find this in the form of “Prestone Driveway Heat Concentrated Ice Melter” (or other ice melter – check ingredients).
1) Pour about 1 cup or so of CaCL2 in a small Tupperware container.
2) Place a sheet of paper on top of the CaCL2 to protect the phone.
3) Place the phone on top of the paper so as not to allow phone to touch CaCL2 (this is important).
4) Place the lid tightly on the Tupperware container.
5) Allow to sit overnight.
In the morning, the “car-kit” error was gone! Yay! I could could hear my callers, they could hear me, and I could hear all my ringers.
I tried Blade’s and one other’s suggestions which have worked for some people (see below) but none worked for me. Try them, they might work for you.
Car Kit
Blade’s instructions To remove errors from phone:
#1) press soft key for menu
#2) then press 0
#3) you'll have a service code prompt, type 000000
#4) then type 2 (it should be field tests)
#5) then type 4 (clear errors)
#6) choose yes for clear errors
#7) press clear once
# type 8 (FCC test)
#9) type one (pcs)
#10) type one again (set channel) (mine shows 426 I don't know if theres a different channel for each phone.)
#11) press clear 3 times and the phone will reset.
To reset defaults
Enter "Menu"
Select "Settings"
Select "Security"
Enter "Lock Code" - Will default to last 4 digits of phone number or "0000" unless changed.
Select "Reset Defaults"
Press "Ok"

Alright, this is cross-posted from a post that I made, not realizing that it would be a better idea to post here:
------------------
Alright here is the deal. I woke up 4 days ago and my V phone was slightly wet, and it appears that some water from a water bottle tipped out and some got onto/into it. So first thing that I notice is that my phone is in "Car Kit" mode, rendering it pretty much useless as I cannot talk on it at all. I searched online and found that this is a common issue with water-damaged LG phones.
I followed every single suggestion given, even taking it completely apart and cleaning it out. When it was taken apart, I saw NO water damage internally. I cleaned out the charger port, tried shorting it out....nothing works. The phone is working flawlessly otherwise, except for the occasional shutting off on me. I know that if I take it to Verizon, they will just say I damaged it and need a new phone, but I mean, come on, it works perfect otherwise!
Any suggestions?

My daughter's lg vx8100 got a little damp and went into "car kit mode." I very much appreciate the suggestions from blade 760 and burn 0050. I tried both ideas, used a hair dryer, removed/reinstalled the battery, all of which, unfortunately, did not work. However, for me, what worked is that I used compressed air to blow-out the battery charging jack, found at the bottom of the phone. I've also heard that using a small brush in the battery charging jack may work too.

Ok. It seems everyone has their own answer to this problem, so I guess the more answers we post, the better the chances are of actually solving a random car kit error problem.
What happened: went into the ocean with my phone in my pocket. Phone powered up but had car kit on the screen and no sound was audible.
How I fixed it: In air conditioned room (dehumidifed), i took the battery out of the phone and let both the phone and battery dry overnight. (12 hours). Next I powered on the phone and 'car kit' was still there.
Next I went to Menu, then i hit '0', then for service code ALL ZEROS. As soon as i got into the service mode, i started hearing beeps again and my phone was fixed!

ok...so what i did was take a corn poky kinda thingy cuz that was what came to mind for some reason (guess it was because i was eating corn). and so i took the poker and i bent one of the two needles and i just kept jabbing the power circle chamber thingy and it started to make noise. turns out that after a few minutes, i took out the battery and the car kit crap started up again. so what did i do? i took the poker and stuck it in for another stab. it started to work again and has been working since.
hope this helps
PS: i tried foil at first and it reseted the phone making noise and when i took the foil out, the phone went back into car kit but not the pokey thing

The only thing that worked for me was to short out the 2 pins in the charger port. If you are holding your phone wiht the screen facing you, the two pins on the right side of the port act as a toggle switch (on or off) when they are shorted out. Becareful not to do accidentally tocuh them twice or you'll just put it right back into car kit mode.

It's possible my phone got somewhat wet, but it's more likely that it was condensation from heat - either way the battery dot still had its little red x's, which were in perfect condition. Car kit mode wouldn't go away. I read every suggestion on this thread. What ended up working was scraping a paperclip across the port, separating each wire from the next. Then I blasted it with some compressed air. I pushed some tin foil into the port and turned my phone on. (Ah, the sweet sound of your phone turning on!) I removed the tin foil and my phone works normally again.
This seems like quite a hassle, though. I've never heard of any phone BUT lg having this sort of issue.

It appears that the car-kit problem is caused by the charger connector being short-circuited, due to dirt or water. I had the problem even though the phone was never wet. In my case, I fixed it by sticking a little needle inside the connector and cleaned out the gunk that collected in there. I suppose it's just a bad design that leaves too little space between the connector ends.
I hope this fixes your problem.

Many thanks to all the posts here for helping me fix my VX5200 after I jumped into the pool with it. DUMB! I dried it as recommended and tried all the other fixes, but none worked. My internal screen was blank so I couldn't type in codes. Only after Verizon told me I had to pay $200 for a new phone (or reactivate my wife's old one online for $20, which sounded ok to me--we have a family plan) did I have the courage to open up my broken one, blast it with air, and brush the terminals with a clean toothbrush. I put it back together and it worked! Without this forum I would be using my wife's old phone--or be out 200 bucks!
