[This is also posted on the accessories section of the site - I'm not sure where it is best suited as a topic]
I have recently purchased the Sony Ericsson K700i. I want to be able to send pictures from my phone to my PC and transfer music, games etc from my PC to the phone. I have been going through the forum and have seen that using a datacable to do this is a no-no as it will only let you transfer files to the phones and not the other way around. If I understand correctly I have 3 options for file-transfers in both directions:
-USB Blue Tooth dongle;
-DSS-25 USB docking cradle;
-Infra-red dongle.
Can anyone help with which is the best to get? I think I have narrowed it down to the first two but cant seem to find out whether the bluetooth dongle or the DSS-25 cradle is better. Both cost around the same on the net. If they both are able to transfer files etc then it seems that the bluetooth dongle may be better, as I dont need to clutter my workspace with the cradle and (I assume) I can use bluetooth with other applications as well. Do you have to install software with either of them?
I have a 98 (first edition PC) which I know wont work with anything, and a Windows 2000 machine at work.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help with this.
V.

I use the data cable and the bluetooth dongle (cable at home and bluetooth at work) and the data cable is more reliable and much easier to use. I also have that docking cradle which is good as you can also flash your phone software with it as well. I would personally stick with the cable (or docking station) unless you have other devices you can use bluetooth with....

thanks for that. I dont currently have anything else that uses Bluetooth (but thought that it might be an option as I may get other blue tooth things in the future). Flashing the phone's software is a key thing for me, if the docking station is the only thing that will let me do that then I think that answers my question! [I want to file share between the phone and the PC, the sticky on data cables suggests that you cant use the cable to get things like photos off the phone.]
Incidentally, what sort of reliability issues do you have with using bluetooth? Is it because of the type of bluetooth dongle you use (i.e. from a less widely established company) or is it just a fact of life with using bluetooth?
cheers

The Bluetooth lets us synchronize with ease. DataCable is bit buggy sometimes.
I myself use a infrared adaptor to connect to my P800 & T300, and a DataCable to Backup my P800. It's great when using it.
| Quote: | Coverage-
Infrared - 10cm
Bluetooth- 10metres
Cable - The very distance of the cable.
Speed-
Infrared- 11200bps
Bluetooth- Comparitively better
Cable - 9600bps
Possibilities-
Infrared- Lets us transfer data up & Down from phone to pc and vise versa. At a moderate speed & short distance without any wire connection.
Bluetooth- Lets us transfer data up & down from phone to pc and vise versa alike the Infrared Adaptor. At a better speed than the Infrared and at a better coverage distance of 10metres which means easy synchronization.
Cable- Lets us transfer data up with ease but downloading from phone could be a bit of an issue. You would needing some software like FMA which could be downloaded here, http://fma.sourceforge.net/ . And when thinking about the Speed it slower than anyother available. But helps us unlock flash our phones. |

The only issue i have reliability wise with bluetooth is that some programs i use don't work with Bluetooth. But for just transferring files its great. If you want to be able to flash your phone you will have to get the docking station (or take it into a Sony Care Centre).

Thanks for all of your help - that is very useful information. I think that the sync-station is the way to go for me at the moment, as I want to be able to flash the phone. I am about to get a new PC though, so I think Bluetooth will be on the agenda then...
cheers
