Who's SIM are you trying to put in the [Cingular branded] phone?
Where did you get the phone from?

I've posted an answer to this is greater detail on another thread. I'll give you the basics...
GSM uses a SIM card which is different than the other authentication mechanisms. Providers (Cingular, T-Mobile, etc.) lock the phones they sell you so that you may only use their SIM cards in the device. The benefit to you is that you get a phone for less than what it would cost you to buy it unsubsidized; the benefit to the provider is that they have a captive audience if you want to use that phone.
for what its worth, there is a lawsuit pending in California right now that I think has merit. The jist of the lawsuit is that the carriers recoup the subsidy on the phone by charging you an ETF (early termination fee) if you leave early; if you don't leave early, the subsidy is paid through the price of your monthly service. Either way, the carrier is made whole. Therefore, except in the case of pre-paid devices, phones should not be locked.
I can't speak from Cingular experience, but when I met the terms of my T-Mobile contract, they gave me the unlock code for my phone. I would think that Cingular would have to do the same if your friend met the terms of their contract.
There are also sites on the web that will provide the unlock codes. Nokia's are among the easiest to unlock, there is software sold on ebay all the time for $7.00. I'm not sure about yours, nor how reputabile the providers of the unlocking service is/are. Once unlocked, you can put anyone's (any provider in any country) SIM card in the device.

You can't blame them for that. You may want to see if you can find on a service/software/etc. on the net - otherwise you may want to donate it to one of the groups that converts phones so they can make 911 calls for people that can't afford cell phones.
Why not just get service with Cingular? They're significantly better than T-Mo in my opinion. (I've had both until recently - just cancelled T-Mo).

It doesn't appear that any unlock code calculation software is currently available for the LG 4050, however if you do manage to find any I would advise extreme caution as I have been stung before. I paid someone on ebay £15.00 for code calculation software for Nokia phones. It worked on some older phones, but did not generate the correct codes for newer phones. I ended up taking out a subscription with http://www.unlocks.co.uk. I have generated codes for about 75 Nokia phones with these guys and haven't had one fail yet! Unfortunately unlocks.co.uk don't provide codes for LG phones, but if you contact them they may be able to point you in the right direction

Hi,
I have a new Nokia 6085. It says it accepts AT&T but they meant the NEW AT&T. I have the old AT&T service. So, I need to unlock it.
Post IMEI: 354831/01/756173/9
Country locked to: USA
Network locked to: NEW AT&T
Any codes attempted: two things attempted 0000 and 1111
Any help is much appreciated!
