I searched and searched and read this thread and others like it.
Finally I figured out you have to convert mp3s/wav to mmf with Yamaha's SMAF conversion tools, then change the extention from .mmf to .mid or .midi.
find SMAF tools at yamaha's website

I just wanted to say THANK YOU to ALL the people who did research and found out HOW (not just posted) to put the "mp3" on the v266. I wasted hours and hours and hours trying to get it to work and motorola tech was no help, idiots TOLD ME that it supported mp3! anyways, thanks everyone yay i have my own free ringtones. NOW, does anyone know HOW to send them to someone else with a v266? my g/f has the same phone but no cable or internet connection so i wanted to send 'em to her. I insert them as an mms and it doesn play, it doesn play when i go to the ringtone and click 'send in message' any help would be great. also when it comes to the MAKING an mms in motorola phone tools, how do you sign on and send them after you make them? im on metro pcs, thanks!

I did everything the steps said to do and sent the mp3 to my phone fine. But when i went to play it, it says the file type is not recognized. Whats with that? Does anyone have an answer. I'd appreciate it.

OK after doing a lot of research and failing to make any method work for my v265 from cricket, I finally found a way to make mp3 ringtones. Without it giving me a "Corrupt File" notice.
ONLY TESTED WITH USB CORD AND Motorola Phone Tools v5.
1) Download and Install ToneThis (free) from tonethis (google the site, sorry but its my first post)
2) Hit Cancel when it asks to install other stuff. Only install ToneThis.
3) Create your profile, then you can make your ringtone. If your on Cricket like me, and it isn't supported, find any company with your phone model (IE: verizon instead of cricket). Put in a bogus # if you like.
4) Hit BROWSE and find the WAV, MP3, or other type of music file.
5) select the length u want. (I suggest using some other audio editor to narrow down your music file, then open that final file in ToneThis)
IMPORTANT:
6) Click on the little options button that looks like a wrench next to the My Locker button. Select Yes, Save copy and put in the directory (C:\). For the other options I ticked NO and NO. Hit OK.
7) Click send to phone. It will try and send to your phone, if your provider is supported. If not don't worry, Either way it will save a file on your C:\ drive called "tt12345.qcp".
Rename the file from "tt12345.qcp" to "tt12345.MP3".
9) Open Motorola Phone Tools (its always a hassle to get it to work, but i found a way to make it work everytime now, MSG me if your need help with that)
10) Move your new "tt12345.mp3" file from MPT to your phone.
DONE
Sounds like a lot, but once you get the steps down its easy!
Let me know if this helped! Or if you got stuck.
