after my 3560 died, i recently bought (ebay) and activated a 6340i on a nation gsm 29.99 plan. i also have the gait coverage also. i gave the csr my esn and can use tdma and analog when i roam on the at&t towers that have not been changed to cingular gsm yet. gait coverage is excellent, i get signal nearly everywhere, but wtih gsm only, coverage is spotty at best.

i have the 64k smartchip sim too. i put the sim in my 3595 and gsm coverage is horrible. with that phone i get 1-2 bars of gsm where my 6340i gets 4-5 bars. i suspect my 3595 has antenna issues, it never worked good.

Can you change the "system setting" and have you selected "Automatic"? In my 6340i, I could not find the option in Manu>Setting>Phone setting>System setting. Does it mean the csr has not put my ESN into Cingular system correctly?
And, when you roam on AT&T, should the screen show something? I'm currently in an area covered by cingular GSM but I need to send the phone to a place in north CA where the GSM is weak and TDMA is strong. I try to make sure my phone is set correctly.

in mine i dont have the system setting feature either. however, whenever i am not on a gsm network the display reads "cingular extend" even if im on cingular tdma, or roaming on at&t or another tdma/analog system. when i activated my gait phone the csr told me it had to have "provisioning". she said that would allow it to recognize the new at&t gsm networks. but thats all i did. they sent me ota gait downloads to update my sim card and i can now get signal pretty much everywhere.

as long as you had the csr enter your esn it should be ok. i would call customer service and have them check the esn and resend the gait downloads just to be on the safe side.

Thank you very much for your information. What is the ota gait downloads and how to update sim sim card? They did not mention these to me. Is it a neccessary step to make the phone work as GAIT phone?

ota is "over the air". its where they send programming to your phone / sim card.

what i would do, to be on the safe side, call customer service and request they send you the gait downloads for your phone and to make sure you have the gait calling area & ask them to make sure your esn is entered correctly on their end.

when you get the download you will get a display asking you to power cycle your phone.

if the system isnt busy they can do it while your on the phone with them, but i have had it take up to 15 mintues to arrive.

** sorry if a similar response is posted more than once, it wouldnt respond when i click submit**

You can use the analog portion of a GAIT phone like the Nokia 6340i but you must set it up right. I had to get into the Field Test Codes and change screen 01-13 Cell Barr, to either reverse or discard. If it is set to accepted I believe you will only pick up GSM.
To see if your using analog go to your Menu, Messages, and then Service Command editor and if it is greyed out you are using analog but if you able use it your using GSM.

The manual network search option listed in your 6340i manual is/was blocked in most (I say most b/c my step father has an old West Coast Cingular SIM that allows him to change networks) Cingular SIM cards.

What this means is there arre certain functions on phones that the provider may not want you to change - as the "Nation" plan allows for roaming anywhere, Cingular would like its phones to choose the cheapest roaming partner, and not allow you to choose a more expensive one, hence the blocking.

One way I used when I had the 6340i to determine if I was in an Analog or GSM area was to store a number in my phone book with a +1+a/c+phone number, like +13125551212. The plus is unique to GSM networks. The phone will remove the + if your dialing in a TDMA or Analog market... In my case, my voicemail number was stored with a +1 preceding it. If I pressed and held the speeddial number for voicemail, it would show the number it is/was dialing - if there was no '+' before the one I knew I was in a TDMA or Analog market.
