I've been considering getting an unlocked Nokia 6340i off of eBay because the GAIT signal reaches an area I travel too often that I can't get with my GSM-only Motorola v400.
My question is, what do I have to do when I get the phone from eBay? Can I simply place my SIM card in the GAIT phone and go on, without messing up my national plan (which has no roaming charges)? Or do I need to talk to Cingular about it? I've seen some posts on this forum on GSM and GAIT, so forgive me for my questions... I'm just a little confused

GAIT was designed as a crossover technology to bridge the existing TDMA/AMPS networks to GSM (when GSM was new to Cingular & AT&T). GAIT phones have GSM + TDMA, and some have AMPS (aka analog).
There were three phones that accomplished this bridge:
Siemens S46 GSM 900/1900 and TDMA 850/1900
Ericsson T62u GSM 850/1900, TDMA 850/1900, and AMPS 850
Nokia 6340i GSM 850/1900, TDMA 850/1900, and AMPS 850

I hope you found a solution to your problem but if not, maybe I can help. I currently own the Nokia 6340i and absolutely love it. Activating my phone was a little tricky though because I live in a different state than where I initially began service more than 5 years ago. When I upgraded to the Nokia 6340i, Cingular had to ship the phone to my parents back in my home town. My father installed the SIM card, charged the phone, turned the phone on, then called a toll free number to speak to a Cingular representative who eventually activated the phone after a few questions and so forth.
I am almost sure you will need to complete the steps above because Cingular can not provide service to your phone unless you call them with the information. I do not believe your SIM card will take care of all the activation steps.
I believe you can purchase a Nokia 6340i that is LOCKED for use with the Cingular wireless network. This may be a wiser choice so you do not have to deal with that whole "locked/unlocked/carrier" mess I hear can be quite a pain.
As for the phone, like I said a few paragraphs ago, I LOVE IT! I read quite a few complaints about GAIT service on other forums and I just can't believe it. I live in Colorado and there are some places notoriously known for bad signals...Not on my phone. My phone "seamlessly" switches between TDMA/GSM/ANALOG without any interruption. Actually, I say no interruption but once in a blue moon my phone will just disconnect my call or completely shut off out of the blue. It is always in the same geographical area but does not happen every time I am in that area. I guess this could be from switching networks but WHO CARES. Have you seen the coverage map for this phone? It's pretty much the entire North America territory.
Ok, good luck Dude! Be sure to post an update after (if) you purchase a phone on EBAY. I am considering a purchase on EBAY for a replacement of my phone. (not the company's fault, I blame it on PBR!)

When you get the GAIT phone call Cingular CS and tell them you will be using it on your account.
They will ask for the ESN number of the phone and add it to your account which will enable the system to recognize your phone as both GSM and TDMA.
There should be no change in your billing(i.e. no roaming charges) and you will have the increased coverage of TDMA.
Your existing SIM card will work fine.
