I also had a similar problem in that the Nokia software wouldn't work with the cheap mail-order cable I bought. (Keep in mind that I ordered from a different place and have a 3220, so my comments may or may not be applicable to whoever reads this.)
However, the original message here gave me the info I needed. Apparently, my cable must also have the Prolific chip in it, because I was able to get their driver to work! (Search for Prolific drivers in an internet search engine and go to the Prolific site.) The trick was that I had to uninstall PC Suite, and install it last, after installing the Prolific driver.
