Then I don't understand, what is the problem with Cingular wanting to switch those customers with GAIT phones (and keeping them) onto a GSM/TDMA plan that offers just about the same coverage area.

hmm lets see, the GSM technology is completely digital, and adopted late 2003.. GSM technology works on various MHZ.. for the gsm phone to be campatible for international calls look for models with MHZ 800 900 1800 and 1900.. those are the different bands the phone can use.. cingular is trying to urge GAIT users to upgrade to the newer technology because the rate plans have a lot more to offer at a cheaper rate and the digital technology will give you better signal.. the merge with at&t also gave cingular the largest digital calling and data network. cingular is putting towers up monthly for this network, so the coverage will deffinately be as great as the GAIT coverage.. which the GAIT system is becoming obsolete, i believe they may be using it more so for the pre paid users.. and lastly, the gsm plans offer national no roaming or long distance charges, and the phone selection gives you a wide variety of different tools you can use.. switching to a gsm plan is highly recommended..

I could not agree more "switching to a GSM plan is highly recdommended" and it is almost the best thing to do.
For those of us who don't need all the whistles and bells changing to a GSM plan while retaining the coverage of the GAIT plan by using a GAIT phone on a GSM plan is by far the best way to go.
I don't need my phone to be a MP3 player, play games, take pictures, keep track of appointments or surf the web, I really only want it to be able to make a call when and where I need it.

BTW when you check the Cingular Nation coverage plan on the Cingular web site it is shown for GSM only phones.
The Cingular Nation plan for GAIT phones, while the same price, has much more coverage.

Went into a Cingular company store location in Boston today and spoke with the manager....he had absolutely no idea what changes are going on with the current GAIT plan subscriber network or the evolving "GAIT to GSM" conversion issue....other than he's being told to move people from GAIT to GSM and to offer GAIT customers a $50 billing credit and a free $300 phone to make the move....I wonder why this desperation by Cingular to get customers off their existing GAIT plan???
