I gave real world experience which is objective. Just saying how yoyu feel is subjective. Read how dissappointed people so many are with Verizon phones on Phonescoop, CNET. etc. While there is always some dissatisfaction, I'm sure you'll be impressed, if objective, with the disproportionate amount of complaints about Verizon phones. Of course, no one has disputed or offered a real world counter about the specifics I mentioned regarding my experience. BEWARE OF VERIZON!

All cell phone carriers have frustrated users. For New York, Consumer Reports rated Verizon the better service. You may want to check out different phones to match Verizon's CDMA network.
From what I understand Att/Cingular's GSM network is not as wide spread as their TDMA network, but this should change over time. Verizon uses the CDMA network, I don't know of any plans for them to roll out a GSM network. The phone and the network supported, as well as a whole lot of other factors will affect cell phone service.
Besides these Forums, I also found the Cell Phone Buying Guide on this website's home page useful.

I wouldn't try switching just yet from ATT/Cingular. The first step you should take which was mentioned earlier is to purchase a GSM quad band phone and switch to a GSM service plan. Because you are running on an older technology you can never tell if the newer GSM technology is working well in your area.
Personally I have Cingular and have for 8 years now and it has worked well for me. Cingular is not perfect but like any other company they serve a purpose. Cingular has a good selection of phones. Many problems that people deal with on Cingular's GSM are related to malfunctioning phone hardware but you would never know. With GSM your phone has a lot to do with everything and not just the signal you receive from your local tower. Cingular's reception is not the best everywhere but where it is... it is normally good. Make sure you research before purchasing a GSM phone. There are some that pick up better signals than others.
With Cingular you can't beat roll over minutes, affordable nationwide contracts with very reasonable minute packages, the option of night minutes starting at 7, the ability of changing your minutes package within your contract and not having to extend it(works well with rollover) and a mostly positive customer service experience.
Verizon on the other hand has very good reception in most areas, holidays are free, itimized billing is nicely detailed and updates online very fast, service plans are very expensive = WYSIWYG.
