no, AIM isn't charged by WAP usage. Each IM is considered an SMS and you are charged the .10 fee for each message.

That's correct. Each outgoing and imcoming IM is counted as a text message (.10/ea). Didn't realize this myself when I first got my phone and quickly went through 350 text messages ($35).

One way to reduce this charge, is to buy one of those text plans, but they can be kinda spendy. I don't know if you can purchase unlim. Text with CIngular. I know you can get 1000 I think for $9.99 or at least that is what i have read.
