i will have to agree with what everyone is saying. nokia has the most user friendly interface which is what sets apart from the others. i recently switched from my 6310i to the v200 and was a little nit picky with how samsung did their interface and stuff. but in terms of improvment and innovation, nokia is lacking.

I must say that ericsson and samsung are coming up with more stylish phones with richer features.

But here in india, nokia still rules because of one and only one thing::MARKETING STRATEGY.

A layman doesn't know the intricate details that are into a phone. He just wants a phone which is small, fits easily into his/her bag or pocket, has a good vibrator and a loud ringtone.
This is where marketing plays an important role. Here in mumbai, where i stay, u can see a nokia hoarding every 1-2 kms. Also, the number of care centres and dealers that nokia has is overwhelming, approx 10 service centres for 1 of a sony ericsson.

There are people who actually look into details before buying, but they contribute to a very small amount of the mobile community here.

nokia may be slow with improvements..but look at 6600 and 7600..finally we have 65k colour and true tones for nokia...they are starting to realize that they are lacking in improvements..and yes i agree with the others..nokia is so popular because of its durability, stable program( duno how some idiots say nokia have unstable program), good reception, and easy to use, alwasy the same menu

samung and motorola and even SE seem to have like a different menu for every fone...its so annoying..i personally would say taht yes nokia is slowing down..but yet they are still holding the number one spot..and they will have a firm spot soon

Nothing really interesting comes from Nokia's hauz except the 6600 and N-Gage, but 2 potentially succesful phonez are far from enough. And Nokia's products are ridicoulosly expensive. Now, da price does matter. Only thing that's really good in Nokia is their support. Coz upgrading the 7650 to a low quality vid recorder for free was quite nice. And so that there won't be misunderstandings: right now, Nokia "rulez" since it has 30 % (absolutely not sure about this, but they're the first) of the market. Whence Samsung really IS coming up, but it's still rather unexperienced and has rather strange flaws in their C100 for example, which doesn't have MMS, whence it has a 65536 screen with 40 chord polyphony. But why is Samsung gaining space so fazt? icon_shifty.gif Did you hear of Samsung anywhere else? Of corz! All sorts of DVD, TVs and home multimedia stuff. SO they have money for the marketing ,and of corz they're succesful. Nokia once really did rock. But it seems that they rely too much on their marketing which really is very good, but not enough if 80 % of their new phones are 50 or an I more than an earlier version that was succeful and the new version actually turned out to be like all other average Nokia fonez with 4096 colors 8 polyphony radio and loudespeaker (but they really did start to do something now). Ericsson had the same problem before it signed its contract with Sony (Actually, Nokia was no.1 in black and white phonezz only for a year or two cuz it was Ericsson that actually managed to get themselves busted so nicely). Now I think that they make tha bezzt phonez in each category. Of corz, many people were complaining about the T300's "horrible" look. So, SE renewed its design, gave it some upgrade and published the T310. If people wouldn't have whined than no T310s would exist, so stop complaining about its nearly unchanged features please.
Watching TV on a phone sounds cool, but without Bluetooth and such... well, the P700 is good for a presentation, but not for usements. I think that the Sony Ericsson Z1010 beats it easily. Not to mention the P810/P900. Now you can't watch TV with that, but if you have a Memory Stick DUO 512 mb with optimalized avi or mp4 movie, you can watch it anywhere with a quite decent speaker quality. That's a nice kick to tha portable DVD playerz. Z600 is cute also thou, but it's just a clamshell remake of the T610, with more improved things than in the T300/310 case of corz. But Siemens also isn out of the race. They make some quite decent phonez too, and have experience in making them. So in overall, Nokia is fading, and everyone else is advancing at a more rapid rate (especially SE).

N-Gage is nothing interesting, all new GameBoys are better in field of mobile consoles, and many new phones are better than N-Gage, but if someone like such mixes, why not... But why games are so expensive??? And why Nokias, which are worse than my T300 (6510, 8310, 3xxx series except 3650), cost more or equally the same as my phone?? Nokia is a monopolyst, it doesn't include new technologies (maybe except EDGE, but for me today only one network in Poland is trying to turn it on) nor trends and voices about "waking and acceleration of Nokia" are a bit without imagination, because other companies aren't waiting for Nokia =D

I've been using phones for quite awhile now, and I remember the days when Nokia's were everywhere hands down with a bit of Motorola here and there.

Lately it seems that Nokia has been losing market share, while other manufacturers are coming out with newer, flashier, and better phones. Samsung is one that stands out to me with 40 tone polyphonic ring tones and 65000 color screens.

While other manufacturers are improving their phones with each new release, it seems that Nokia has stuck with the same 4 tone polyphonic, 4096 color standard it's been using for previous models. It's like they just have a bin of parts they use to make a new phone... "I'll take one of those radios, a 4096 color screen, throw in some software used in the 6610 and 7210, and design a new case for it." *Poof!* A new phone release.

I know other manfactuers like Sony Ericsson release different phone models for the same phones (T610/T616, T310/T316, T300/T306, etc.) but it's the same phone with different frequency bands depending on region. Nokia repackages parts and releases it as a completely new phone.

I'm not a huge supporter of any one manufacturer but I've just noticed this trend. Perhaps its more widespread than just Nokia, but that stands out in my mind.

If Nokia continues this trend, I think that other companies like Samsung and Sony Ericsson are going to have a good shot at taking over the top spot. Any thoughts?

I have to agree with your obeservation about Nokia having many phones yet similar features. However in my experience (which I do not claim is exhaustive) it seems that even though Nokia does not have the flashy ness on many of their phones, what IS there really counts. In other words we have to remember that the most important features of a phone are the quality of construction, reception and user interface. I feel that Nokia does this better than any other company on 90% of its phones. That is not to say that their are not other quality phones out there, it is just that when you purchase a Nokia product you can be pretty certain that you will be getting a product that at least meets ans/or exceeds certain standard of quality. I cannot say the same for any other phone maker.

Just a thought here. If case for point, wouldn't an old nokia phone be the same as new nokia phone. ( function, reception bla bla bla...) then why buy a new nokia phone? since they have the same function all the while, wouldn't it wise to hang on to your old phone? and by the way, nokia reception is the worst among the three model, naming Samsung and SE.
and no way can they win the fantastic polyphonic sound of Samsung and SE.

I am a market researcher by profession and was heavily involved in mobile phone research for 3 years. I have been to many parts of the world, talking to users of mobile phone and to understand why certain people prefer a particular brand over the other.

Amongst the top 20 countries that I conducted this research, the top reason for selecting Nokia is for its "user-friendliness" software and "compatability" accessories like handsfree and mobile charger across all models.

Many claimed that they have used other brands before but once they switch over to Nokia, it will be unlikely for them to swtich to other brand.

65K Colour phone and 40-poly is "nice to have" things but priority is still given to user-friendliness of the software.

Personally, I felt that Nokia's marketing strategy is way ahead of other brands which made them the leader of the market. For me the gap between Nokia and other brands is fast narrowing, though I don't think Nokia need to press the red alert button yet.

Samsung is very agressive too in their marketing effort, overtaking Motorola and Siemens in many countries once a stronghold of the latter brands. I recently bought the Samsung C100 as a gift to my wife who was all the while using Nokia 8210. I can dare say that the functions, user-friendliness is on par if not better than my Nokia 6610, albeit 3 times cheaper in price!!!

I was considering Nokia 3100 prior to choosing the Samsung C-100 but Nokia was more than USD50 more expensive although it has the MMS feature but my wife is only using it as a basic communication tool, thus C-100 is more value for money in that sense.

Nokia upcoming models is very exciting, in particulat the 6600, one of the last frontier before 3G era in late 2004 or early 2005. Hate to say but Nokia's camera phone ability is still below the technology of Sony Ericsson but how many techno savvy guy out there now who are willing to pay additional USD200 just for the camera function?

My guess is Nokia will still lead the market for the next 2 to 3 years but will have its leads cut as Samsung, Sony Ericsson and Motorola fast improving.
