Low end Nokia phones are really unimpressive compared to low end Sony erricsons or even low end Motorlas .
You are probably right.

As for the panasonic GD88 and the motorola v600 (or even the sagem myx6), those phones may have pretty sounding features but at the end of the day the functionality, upgradability and mobility of the 7650/3650/3660/6600/Ngage rule. With the upcoming 7700 , Nokia will up the ante even further.
This is because all the Nokia phones that you have mentioned are Symbian OS based. I manufacturers like SE and Samsung release Symbian OS based ones (infact SE has the P800/P900), then Nokia will be blown away completely. Just wait for the upcoming SE rival to the N6600, the Nokia is no match for it.

As for nokia being boreing, what a laugh. Go to all the company websites and take a look at their phone models. In terms of design only the nokia page features any real variation.
BTW, the T610 was awarded the best phone in terms of design.

Between the P900 and the upcoming Nokia 9500 I would go with the 9500.
Wait for the successor to the P900 and I am sure that u will change your decision.

Nokia's problem is probably its cockiness since it's the market leader.
It took Sony-Ericsson to show that people wanted their phones to interoperate easily with PCs, PDAs and other devices and not be restricted to Nokia branded accessories (e.g. for years Bluetooth communications was awful or difficult).
It took Samsung to show that people are tech-savvy and want the latest in technology (e.g. 4K color phones while others are 65K, passive LCD while others are TFT).
It took quite a number of mobile providers in Asia, Europe and the US to show that these companies want value and not hype with the phones they provide their subscribers (compare the price of a Nokia with that of LG).
So Nokia has less interoperability, less state-of-the-art gadgets, less value. Is it any wonder it's losing market share?

N7700 and N7610 are not 'state of the art' ?

Well I had nokia's (3210, 3310, 3410) all my life until a month ago. I switched because the nokia's just didn't do it for me style wise, in my personal taste none of the new nokia's looked anything like what I wanted and thus I jumped ship and moved across to Motorola and the V600. Lovely phone. A little difficult to get used to (non nokia keys etc) and not as good as nokia text messaging but apart from that it's great.
The only Nokia I would consider is the 6230, which looks ok and has a great set of features apart from the screen which is small (128x128 pixels) compared to my V600 (176x220 pixels) at the same colour depth... and I guess the screen is the most looked at part of the phone so that is paramount for most users(?)...
k.....i satrted with a nok ....hmm i dont rem the model no.(the 1 that use to change the body color) which was a temprory phone from my uncle....and then moved to ericsson t28..which was 100 times better w/ the start up/shutdown shows, size etc......
nokia always had the same features.,menu styles, light color(yellow)etc....which made it real boring.........and the phones are sooooooooooooooooooooooooo common...
even the coulor phones........i use to own a 7210 which was 174$....and then i saw the 6610......which had good a design.......but dind know its features....i then i went to the market, and asked the price they said 240$...thought there will be a lot new features but i saw NO diff. other than design...i was stuned!!!could not understand why the price was high....but the SE always has somthin which makes it intresring......it had the first color phone and grid menu, where both are famous now!!!!
the T610 which is 293 $ is way better than the 7250i which is 320 $ here
anywayz the K700,S500 and Z1010 will really give the competitors a great job......and lets wait to see the next Touch Screen of SE
any wayz by 2005 the SE will climb high.....

@Ranjith
It's S700 and not the S500.
Also, the upcoming K500 & F500 from SE which are due to be announced next month are gonna give some big competition to similarly priced models from other manufacturers.

you know what... you purchase the latest model of nokia phone... in about less than a month your phone is already old.. nokia releases models of phone everytime that makes them very (@#@#@) anyways unlike the other phone models like SE or Samsung.. they maintain the quality and the style... they are sure of the things... nokia 6600 was even a crap... most buyers of that phone returned it due to simultaneous hanging...

I can remember the day when most mobile phones just had different text menus, and Sony and Ericsson we're not a joint venture on the mobile industry, looking back then - I didn't really find much difference between most mobile phones, then Nokia users were able to send ASCII picture messages, usually just semi-party-porn graphics for humour, then came color screens and so forth.
One interesting aspect is that although most mobile manufactors are great companies, some are simply better than others, nobody can really predict who's going to be #1 entirelly though, I know this... Korean manufactors of just about everything are in a bit of trouble in terms of money so nobody run off and by a Hyundai mobile LOL, Nokia's already ahead in the game with their current position playing at their biggest advantage, I think they'll keep using the methods they see works - this may hold for now, though I'm sure before too long someone will surpase them. NEC in conjunction with the 3 carrier will be something interesting to watch, Internet calls and the idea of fast video-live-stream data is definitly going to be something of the future, Nokia and Sony Ericsson have already released mobile phones with Video-recording capabilities, at present NEC on the 3 network is the only (in Australia) deal with live video calls (for mobiles).
In terms of SE vs Nokia, I'd say that people are tiring from Nokia - consumers are ready to move onto something newer and exciting, with respect to SE specifically (T610 and family models), there's a calling for more focus on the "little things" that make all the different, say NO to predefined items - for gods sake, they just annoye people especially of all items on a unisex phone why would SE predefine a Rose and a Flower picture? More user-friendlier terms in menus and a strong focus on better making the mobile phone as compatable with other models.
Nobody wants to be alienated.

Nokia lead the market not only because of their enormous range of handsets which offer something for everybody, as well as having The nokia developer forum, which is important and influential, especially when it comes to new apps and content. Their styling is an issue as well, I have a samsung X600 and an E700, and they both feel plasticky and cheap, as well as having a rather cheesy interface with the embedded pictures and ringtones giving a very kitsch feel to the whole user experience, added to the fact that the processor is quite slow, a problem shared with the T610, which hasnt improved much withthe T630. I personally think that people who have owned a higher end Nokia handset learn to integrate it easily with their working environment including other devices. Symbian simply rocks.
BTW, does any body know the limit on bluetooth functionality for Moto V525? I cannot seem to be able to transfer Java jar files from my pc.
