I am going to setting up mine and my wife's phones with a Cingular MEdia Net package tomorrow but unsure "how much" we need (i.e 500k, 1 MB, etc.). Is there a way to track or maybe a running tally of the kilobytes are used over a period of time so I can extrapolate what amount we would each use more or less in a typical month?
Thanks in advance

You wireless usage should be on your bill each month, so I guess the easiest way would be to look through your past few month's bills. If its not on your paper bill, try checking it through your account online.

That does remind me that the usage will appear on my paper bill which will help. I just wish there was a way to track during the billing cycle so when I got close to my "limit" like you do with minutes you can slow down, stay offline, etc until the new billing cycle starts. I know it is only penny per kilobyte or similar but that can probably add up fast if you're not too careful....

Isn't there a menu in your phone that tells you your total kb and current. The V600 has that feature. Of course, it is not 100% accruate and should only be use as a reference.

That is the kind of thing I would look for. The phones my wife and I have are v220 and v180 respectively.

Try going to menu, recent calls, data volumes.

if you log on to the cingular site, and view your account activity, you'll be able to see wireless data usage within a day or two of actually using the service (voice call activity shows up usually within a couple hours if you're in your home market). I'm not sure about other phones, but the Moto's will tell you how many bytes were transferred when you end a web session.

I found that if you modestly use the Internet Express for news, weather, traffice, etc, then it's not cost effective to go with a plan. I ocassionally browse the news every couple days and I used around 250kb one month... billed at $.01/kb it came out to $2.50. Not too bad. Unless you are downloading large emails and such, don't go with a plan unless you will be constantly on the net.
