"What is the point of Cingular?"
What's the point of this post? Your phone doesn't work where you live/go to school. Lots of people have this issue, as not every carrier is everywhere. Unlike you, these hearty individuals suck it up, return the phones, and take it like a responsible human being.
Time to start acting like an adult, kiddo.

My opinion, everyone has a right to vent. Only the stuck up yuppy/mommy and daddy pay for everything vent in a manner that's childish though.

Should she vent if she's getting frustrated? Sure. Should it make sense? YES.

yea i meean if you live on the corner of BFE and You got a real perdy mouth, your probably not going to get service. Dont blame cingular it states in your T&C "Cingular does not guarantee service everywhere" so blame the person who sold you the service and said it would work. If you have pre paid quit complaining drop the service and get somthing else.

I transfered my business phone from Verizon to Cingular after much praise from partners in San Antonio. I live and work in Boerne just 20 miles north of San Antonio.
When I signed up I said I needed the phone for the hill country and the helpful representative took me over to the coverage map and said look all dark red, we cover more than any other provider - "Raising the Bar". I said GREAT, I drive all over the hill country and require exellent connection at all times. She said we have you covered.
I filled out the application with my down town Boerne address. Transfered service and got a new phone.
I have to drive half way to San Antonio just to get my daily voice mail and make my morning business calls. No Boerne is not covered. there should be a white dot in the dark red area. Almost any small town aroung Boerne I get so so coverage and only great in San Antonio. I can stand on my business building roof and count 9 towers within 5 miles and also see the only tower with Cingular coverage 14 miles south.
The Cingular store denies ever telling me that I was covered and recommends a different phone to increase range.
So I miss 80 % of my bussiness calls on the road in Boerne and the Hill Country. I don't make as many sales for my bussiness as before and miss vitally important change orders daily, but it is much quieter and I have much more time for personal reflection.

I, personally, happen to REALLY like Cingular. I like their selection of phones, plans & coverage. I also like the no roaming charge feature as well as the other aspects of Cingular (IE the wide coverage area across the states).
If you have a problem in ONE area...that doesn't constitute a horrible provider....just what I call a 'kill zone'...an area that doesn't get signal. ALL providers have such 'kill zones' in some areas or another. It's something EVERY cell user deals with at SOME time or another.

I think Cingular is much better than my other choices. Husband has Verizon- so many dropped calls, static etc. Daughter had Sprint and signal problems when travelling etc.
I do not have a decent signal in my house (no towers in the middle of town and I understand that) but I've never had a problem getting a signal otherwise. My daughter even hunted me down recently in a snow storm up above 6000 ft in the Sierra Nevada mtns.
The rollover option is wonderful, love the Nationwide plan, love the Cingular to Cingular calling (put all the family but husband on Cingular-his is company phone ).
I'm not completely enchanted by the phone selection vs the Euro/Asian phone selections but for US carriers I think Cingular has one of the broadest selections.
Even customer service has sometimes been absolutely wonderful.

I switched over to Cingular and have called Customer Service several times to inquire about my plan options, etc. I must say that they reps have been great and professional. Everything was done to my satisfaction. So I can't complain about them. In the course of 13+ years, I have had ATT, Nextel, Verizon, and Cingular. So far Verizon and Cingular has been great.
I ditto some of the comments made by others in previous threads, it's not always the carrier. It may be your location and phone. The coverage may be there but your crappy phone does not receive the reception well. Not all carriers have receptions everywhere for you. Try it out in the area you work out of the most and see. You have 15 - 30 days with some carriers for refund guarantee.
